I finally got to put the Boogie through the ringer Saturday night at a gig and all I can say is.............. wow!
We were playing in a smaller place, so I used the amp with the 4 ohm out and the 2 6v6's selected.
The best way to describe the tone of this amp is warm, even and responsive.
I had the tone controls set fairly neutral...
volume at 11 0'clock
treble at 1 o'clock
mids at 10;30
bass at 12 o'clock
reverb on just enough to let it be a little wet.
The amp breaks up a lot later than say a vintage Deluxe...I had it set to where it would just start to growl a little if I hit it hard. When clean the highs are very fat, the mids are present and the lows were distinct and it didn't fart out...even with the alnico 10's.
This amp doesn't suffer the buzziness of the other dual recs...hell, it don't sound like any Boogie I have ever played through...much sweeter tone....vintage Fenders are the only other amp that really compares to what this amp sounds like.
A couple of cool features..the mid control acts like a gain control when you go past 12 o'clock...adds gain and makes the amp a little darker sounding.
The reverb is absolutely killer! I haven't used verb much over the past few years, because of the lackluster reverbs on the amps I have had of late.
The reverb sounds better than the reverb my old pre CBS Deluxe and that is saying a lot!
There is one other small thing that blew my mind...my guitar was perfectly balanced in all five pick up positions...they all sounded spectacular.
The one thing that threw me about the amp was the way it takes OD pedals...it liked my Blues Pro and my OCD....but backwards from what my other amps have.....The Blues Pro really shined at low to medium gain and the OCD was used for more saturated stuff. I will have to try a Crunch Box through it.....I have a feeling that it would suit this amp with its pronounced upper mids and give me a psuedo Marshall tone.
If I had to compare this amps tone with another, I would say it is a cross between a tweed Fender and a blackface Fender....it is smooth with a complex midrange, yet it can sound aggressive.
Is the amp a keeper?...you bet! I told my wife to punch me square in the face if I ever even suggest trading it....it is that good.
I am going to play a big place this weekend and run it with the el84s.......
Stay tuned.
