Blue Cap Fender Sozo Caps In Place

It's a bit early because John says it takes at least 20 to 100 hours for the caps to warm in...

I don't use the stock tone stack arrangements in my Pro Reverb BF amp and instead of using the 250 pf/.1/.047 setup...I instead prefer 250 pf mica, .022/.022...The Sozos I bought were .022 value caps...I also replaced 1 Orange Drop value of .022 that was supposed to be .047 on it's way to the PI with a Mallory 150 .047..I actually could still use some .1 and .047 Sozos and one of these days I'll get those too.

Ok so far....The amp is a bit brighter,lovely shimmer on top,Because the amp is a bit brighter,it also seems as the though the amp is more powerful sounding...Note attack is pretty fast and punchy and the lows are tighter...Very nice lush clean tones from the amp....The amp is not as smooth as it was with the 715 Orange Drops I pulled and maybe a bit toppy...I atribute this to the new caps,which I'm guessing will smooth out after several hours of playing...Even though the caps are new,I like the way the amp sounds and feels...I notice this really nice complex note thing that I hear with Sozos in my old Marshall...The Sozos add this nice overall lushness that I hear,but it's hard to explain...The amp seems livelier also.

I think once the new caps burn in,my Pro Reverb will sound alot better...

Cool experiment,worth the effort,and I Like what I'm hearing so far...

The mustard Sozos sound great in a few amps I have them in; as you say, there is more complexity to the note. I think this is best heard in an amp that you are very familiar with and with a relatively clean tone; higher gain may swamp it out. Looking forward to my Blue Caps arriving next week sometime...

The mustard Sozos sound great in a few amps I have them in; as you say, there is more complexity to the note. I think this is best heard in an amp that you are very familiar with and with a relatively clean tone; higher gain may swamp it out. Looking forward to my Blue Caps arriving next week sometime...

The amp is a bit brighter and definately more "immediate",but I Like the way it sounds....It should warmup and smooth out (Like my Marshall) did after the breakin time is over....I'm not at all sorry for spending the money on the Sozos again..Nice looking caps also!

Thanks for the review. I'm gonna leave the OD's alone in my Princeton Clone,But next time my HRD goes tits up on me.:naughty: I'm gonna gut the PCB out ,And put in a Blonde Bassman 6G6-b circuit into it. Then I'll use the Blue Zoso's.:cool2:

My amp was warmer and had more lows before the cap changes,but I'll give it some time and see if the amp warms up,or if I warm up to the amp? ;o) Naturally I still have the caps that I pulled,so not worried really...The amp sounds great,but it is different.

Here's a couple of photos....Notice the new Sozos are only currently in the tone stack of both channels....I'm finding I still very much like the Orange Drops...The amp has more lowend and to me,the amp seems a bit warmer...I had Mallory 150s in a few spots,but have now gone back to ODs...

I got mine today and put them in a .022/.022./250/56K tone stack (replacing polyester Mallorys) in the normal side of my wacky '68 Bandmaster with a Bassman OT/PT...yep, a little brighter but more detailed across the board; nice, we'll see how they burn in. Also put a set in a LP Special w/some older Gibson P90's and they sound GOOD as tone caps, very good, in fact (at least to me). They remind me of Sprague Black Cats ala early 60's Gibsons...

Yes I agree....I noticed the tone was brighter,more immediate,and also clearer,but I did go back to Orange Drops in a few spots...I had a mixture of Mallory 150s,and the blue Sozos....I'm finding that to my ears,the OD caps allow more lows to come through...They aren't as clear sounding,but I Like them in the Fender circuit..In my Marshall I hated them but loved the Sozo first series caps! In key places I can hear a difference in tone and feel..

good to know. ive always liked the od in fender circuits cause they sound a little fatter but used the 150's in others where i wanted a clearer tone. nice to know that the blue sozo's shave a little bottom end. that can be useful

Hi Jeremy.....Not sure if the tone stack blue sozos alone are creating the brighter and clearer tone...I do know that after alot of hours of playing through the amp,they should warm up...They did on my Marshall..The Sozo caps in my experience with them..They add this nice harmonic complexity to the clean tone of the amp..I imediately noticed this with the Mallory 150 and blue sozos together in my Pro Reverb...I missed the lows though and did go back to mostly Orange Drops,but left the sozos only in the tone stack...They are all .022 as I prefer that over the .1.....047.....250 pf stock tone stack arrangement....The vibrato channel still has the 100k slope resistor,but the modded normal channel has an adjustable slope resistance via a pot....I actually use and prefer the normal channel more in this amp..I find I Like the slope resistance around the 56 to 68k ranges on my normal channel,as it adds a bit more gain and rawness to the amp..

Yesterday I ordered more Mallory 150s and some Dijon caps from Mojo to try out...I'm experimenting(again) to see what changes the different brand/style of caps have on the tone of the amp...I still seem to favor the Orange Drops overall,or it's what my ears are used to listen to with my Fender stuff..
