Blue Voodoo

So guys, have any of you used a Crate Blue Voodoo amp? I've been given the chance to buy a perfectly good condition(I've played it) 60 watt Blue Voodoo. Normally I wouldn't pay any attention but the owner had it biased for EL34's and it has been recently retubed. 250 bucks. Think it's worth it?

For 250 bucks, I say give it a shot. I played a Blue Voodoo head at Guitar Center a couple times. If I remember correctly, the gain was a bit buzzy and undefined. Also I thought it was too scooped for my liking (but then again, any scooping of the mids is too much for me).

But for 250 bucks, maybe it's worth a listen. Plus the stock one's uses 6L6 power tubes, maybe the EL-34's will sound better. Give it a listen.

Is it a head or a combo?

It's the 1/12 combo amp they don't make anymore. The dist. was totally not what you said, maybe the EL34's did a lot of good, the gain was very defines and has a large amount of gain but still silent and very clear.

I must have been wrong then because I doubt replacing the tubes would completely alter the tone. Was the tone scooped like I said? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong crate. Then again, I tried the 3 channel huge head version.

This is a 2 channel combo, and reportedly has a diff. tone than the big 3 channel head. It's only a scooped sound if you EQ it scooped. It can be scooped and I did try it but I like my mids.

i never really liked the blue voodoos old or new, kinda buzzy like joe said but ive never tried the combo or with el34's

One of my friends has an EL34 60W Voodoo head. It is pretty decent for thrash metal and all the Metallica-Slayer-Megadeth-like stuff but it's not the king of the hill. A Marshall will do the job much better but for $250 a Voodoo is a bargain.

i got a BV 60 combo. those really old ones.
i put in EL34's as well. they sound great to me.
not really scooped by nature.
distortion aint that great tahts why i use a pedal but the cleans are actually good with 6L6s in mine.

and yeah for $250 why not since its in good condition as well.
got mine for about the same price

Yeah, I guess it's an OK amp. For 250 bucks I don't think I would personally pick it up, because it did sound scooped to my ears (then again, I don't care for Mesa's either for the same reason). For my personal tastes I wouldn't, but if you like the sound 250 dollars is a pretty good deal.

I also like EL-34's better than 6L6's... maybe it's worth a go to buy it.

I've played the two channel one a couple of times and for what it does, I don't consider it bad at all. The distortion is a bit buzzy, but I don't find it muddy, it's pretty articulate. It was funny to play heavy styled music on it, but I wouldn't try to compare it to a Mesa or a Marshall.

The clean channel is pretty bland. However, it is clearer than some others out there (aka the modern day Marshalls I've tried).

For that price, it's a good deal and for shredder kiddies, it fits the bill pretty well.

I was planning on buying one, but a dude I know made an ugly face when I told him. He told me the dynamics are extremely bad, we're both lead players so we have to be picky about that. Another factor would be the hi-gain options, not too impressive. It was slightly more expensive than the SL-X, about the same price I could pick up a JCM800 2210. I ofcourse didn't do it, also because I checked the pricing on your eBay and man those things sell for ridiculous prices. The big music store we have in the city, have had a BV for about 4/5 years I think. These things don't seem to sell, I can't really blame 'em because they sell the BV120 head for about the same price as a Marshall Mode Four head or DSL50

I got an older BV60 1-12 combo amp and it sound good.

I have located several on the market and none sound like the one I got...

Go figure.

I had an old 60 watt combo I really dug. I swapped out the thin speakers with some G12H30s I had at the time and it really rocked nicely. Moderate gain head, very nice clean, and odd eq points if I recall. I actually like the new ones I have plugged into lately. I think they are a bit underated.
