Blueman has converted me! I love the 250k volume pots on my Les Pauls.

Re: Blueman has converted me! I love the 250k volume pots on my Les Pauls.

I'll come clean...I do use 500k pots but I disconnect the tone controls and just wired the caps in line so it's like having the tone control on 0 all the time...any other way and it's just too toppy...I'm actually thinking about running an outboard EQ of some kind to trim off a touch more top end...

I own alot of guitars and I just tweak each one to what I feel and hear makes it the best I can get it....Most of the 250k pots I'm seeing are well below 250k anyway...Sometimes I correct that on the carbon or I'll just meter until I find the value that I feel works...Also I'll use a brighter or warmer set of strings on a guitar if it's close...Different cap values also...Most of us on here have been playing guitar for "alot" of years..I'm guessing most of us know what works for our own playing styles..

Thats too much work John...just plug in and turn the volume up full and the tone all the way down...that way you're getting maximum fatness...nobody really likes that top end that an electric guitar makes, it's a terrible noise.

Sorry. I've been retaining water lately and cramping, and haven't been my normal jovial self.

Actually, I've had the flu for the last two weeks, and am way behind on my sleep.

So thats what it is? ;o) Not picking on you Blueman and it's not just you...I've spoken my peace with you...I haven't been too nice and overly sensitive(which is normal for me)... ;O)

I'm an avid tweaker and it's very rare that I actually like something as is...Maybe work isn't the right words, cause you know I thoroughly enjoy every aspect of the tonal equation...

Plus I'm retired now and have alot of extra time! ;o)

+1. When I test pots, I get readings from 235 to 275.

If I'm really anal...I actually remove some carbon from around the outside edges and I can dial the resistance in perfect...Really not something that probably makes much difference, but it's cool....

Christian, your method is too much work as well. I just grab a wah, and heel down. Much easier than twisting the tone knob.

Sometimes i put an actual blanket over the speaker, glue cardboard to the pole pieces of the pup, and coat my strings in molasses. Pencil eraser nut works wonders too.

Messing with gear, guitars, pedals, and amps....Is fun....Never work! ;o) It is addictive though! Lately I'm repairing my own stuff and band stuff....Love it.

I tried that method for a while but being a purist I like to be able to get my tone w/o pedals if need be so the hardwired tone cap works however I do still carry a moving blanket for those bright stages and rooms where I need peel off a slight bit more high end.

I'm actually working on a way I can dip my strings in hot wax to deaden the sound a little...plus the strings last longer!!!

Good luck with the hot wax....Wear gloves... ;o)

Bud of mine uses plaster of paris. A little tough to bend but will kill off the rest of that pesky high end!

And you never have to change strings again....unless you drop your guitar.

Heatshrink tubing covering the entire length of all strings would work. ;o)

Guys, there is only one way to get rid of enough treble to make the sound fat and full...I lay my amp face down on an egg-crate foam pad, and then mic the stage a few feet away. It works wonders on those pesky high endy sounds.

Re: Blueman has converted me! I love the 250k volume pots on my Les Pauls.

Hmm work on the cover in front of the speakers....
Guitars do not sound nice pr nature...middy harsh yellers....
The range is also very limited....and so on and on and on...blah blah and we talk pages up and down for decades;)....hehe sorry!

For years now I have used alittle tone knob here and there, turned the volume down a very small notch, just worked with it, until it was second nature, picked the cables that was alittle more round in their sound, it is not always the most expensive and nicest that works the best, but time will teach us all that if we use the ears more than the eyes!

I have taken out speakers, put extra layers of speaker cloth, used a towel, anything....
To dial out that cone some....just enough so it does not totally drowned out, and sounds like a muffled pig;)
Figure out what works together, not chasing too much in the details....that runs down the obsessive road and will distract your more than help you!
Guitars needs to be somewhat ugly, or it won't work!
It is the balance that is the key, work on how you pick, how you play and all that...way more important than 270Kohm or 312,5Kohm;)

Except for alot of repair stuff lately,I do play alot more and tweak alot less...Gave up the pedal stuff also(except for myself)...My playing has moved up a notch and I feel it... ;o)

Re: Blueman has converted me! I love the 250k volume pots on my Les Pauls.

Hehe yeah...I turned up the repair stuff as well....the pedal side has turned into a sidething now....But that is nothing new by now haha!
I'm using the same stuff alot now....the same three-four pedals are used now, and only the amps drive is what I dabble with now....
Got alot of different guitars instead....covers all the ground I dig:)
