Blues Amp 2x10 or 1x15 ?

I've noticed some 30 to 40 watt amps, notably the Peavy Delta blues, is offered in two flavours. One has 2x10 speakers and the other 1x15. I know there are other setups 4x10, 2x12, 3x10, 1x12, etc, but I was wondering what people's opinion are about 2x10 vs 1x15.

I'm not much of an expert on 1x15, but I own a 2x10 Fender Custom Vibrolux reverb. I love the overall tonal character of the 10s, though my amp's speakers don't handle bass as well as I'd like. I'm going to get around to trying a few different speaker options at some point.

I've also tried the peavey delta blues 2x10 a few times. I think it's a great amp.

I like the crisper voicing of 10's over 15's. Also two 10's seem punchier to me than a 15.

The actual physics of speaker configurations can easily get over my head, I usually leave this stuff to the scientists among us, but I heard something pretty interesting the other day.

It actually came about when discussing PA's. Myself, my brother and my Dad were talking about the pro's and con's of different sized bass bins when, I think it was my Dad that mentioned something I'd never thought of before. Basically, the smaller a speaker the less frequencies it will attempt. Which is when flabbiness happens.

To some extent a 10' speaker will just ignore the frequencies that can cause muddy bass in bigger speakers. We talking the absolute bottom of the audio spectrum here, I'm not saying 10' speakers won't register your bottom E string or anything! I'd always just assumed that bigger meant more bass, which to some degree I suppose it does, it just doesn't neccessarily mean BETTER bass.

I don't know how this translates to blues amps, I'm not much of a blues player to be honest. But I guess in general it just comes down to what sort of bass sound you're after. If it's boomy, earth-shattering stuff then the bigger the better as far as speakers are concerned. But if you want tight, focused bass then get smaller speakers. Of course you can't just concern yourself with bass response when you're choosing your amp's speaker configuration. This stuff translates to all other frequency bands as well.

I've only ever owned guitar amps with 10' speakers and I can't imagine that changing any time soon. You can't get the same sort of focus and clarity from anything else, but to some extent I do think you sacrifice gutsy power. You just have to decide which is more important to you.

Theoriticaly about 20x2" speakers with a 15" and a 2x8" would be ideal :P...

But realisticaly, 2x10's will have more versitility than the huge 15". If you play slide guitar only, I'd probably suggest the 15inch tho...

I had a 2x10 Tweed Super I built and didn't care for the 2 10's. I turned it into a Tweed Pro 1x15 and love it.

i'd prefer 2x10 speakers over one 15. For rhythm, the 15 really rocked, but when i'd kick a lead out, it'd sort of get lost. My notes just tended to get buried when i'd push leads into the mix.

Re: Blues Amp 2x10 or 1x15 ?

i owned a DB15 before and asked the same question to myself before.
at the end ; i never had the chance to test the 210.
to me this 15" speaker was'nt producing the sound i was excpecting.
i found it also unuseable to use it for practice - you need to crank it up
badly to get the right bluesrock sound.

this amp (the db15) is nice for playing clean at high volumes - for this size.
i have no expirience with the db210 - sorry,

if i would now think of buying a db15 or db210, i'd rather go for
the classic30 and build in something like a GB12 speaker - my opinion.

Re: Blues Amp 2x10 or 1x15 ?

I just sold a Mesa Maverick (4-10) and now use a (2-15) Dual showman cab with a Carvin
MTS head running it. The reason I didn't care for the Maverick was the 10" speakers + Class A's tendency to be midrangy. I've used Twins for years and the Carvin-Showman nails that big bottom feeder tone. I tried running the Maverick into the Showman cab but wasn't impressed with the tone. I do miss the midrange frequencies that the 15 doesn't have. Maybe I'll customize my cab with a 10 a 12 and a 15 and have the best of all options!
