I'm thinking of installing a pearly gates bridge and an alnico II pro neck on my semi-hollow body guitar. I also heard that a pair os 59's would also sound fantastic. I'm looking for a bluesy sound. Any ideas? Thanks:scratchch

I think either one would be very good. A lot of players like the a2 pickups in semi-hollow guitars. I think I would prefer the '59's though. The would be a little brighter in a type of guitar that can be a darkish sounding. I think I would go Jazz neck (not as boomy IMHO as the '59 neck) and the '59 bridge if it were my guitar.

Re: blues question

Thanks for the input. Any ideas of how to install pickups in a semi-hollow body that has no access front or back?

Putting pickups in a semi-hollow is not an easy job !!

I have done it a few times and it is a slow process and can be very frustrating.

Do you have good soldering skills ?

If not, have the work done by a pro, or at least someone you can trust to do it well.

There are some "tricks" to doing this, but if you can't solder well and don't have patience....don't attempt it!!!

I'll tell you how i did it, if you post a reply that you intend to try it.

Re: blues question

For Bluse and nice warm tones, I would consider using the AlnicoII Pro set. Both Neck and Bridge. In a 335 type of guitar that is magical

Re: blues question

To do wiring work on a semi-hollow (with no control cavity cover on the back as is usually the case) you have to take the entire wiring harness out of the guitar. You have to unscrew all the knobs, the switch and the jack and pull them all out either through the f-hole or through the bridge pu cavity.

That part is easy. Getting them back in is tricky. Some have suggesting tying a string or wire to the jack or to one or more of the pots and when you're done, just pull the string(s) and everything more or less comes back into position. I find that if I can fish the jack back into its hole I can use needle-nose pliers to pull the pots into their holes.

Re: blues question

Z describes the process well and it's not nearly as big a deal as it sounds- Afterall they had to get the guts into mass produced guitars in a hurry, and once you get the tecnique down it's not hard, just cumbersome. As he said. make sure that everytime you take something out, that it pulls a string behind it so you can fish the replacment part back in later.

For some reason, semi-hollow bodies were the rage in mid 70s when I got in to mods, and all of the midlevel stuff (univox abounded..need I say more?) that needed the upgrades was practically always hollow and always plumbed differently-

I never thought to ask why, but that's the point..if a scared 16 year can do it, so can you!

Just curious...did you decide to try to do the work yourself ?

If you are finished (or part way through) did/is everything go/going OK ?

The local guitar tech here uses surgical tubing instead of string (use an inside diameter of tubing that is a snug fit over the pot shafts) just thought I'd pass that along to you.

Re: blues question

Interesting thread....I just bought a pair of Seth A2 annis for my R9......I'm going to have my tech flip the magnet in the bridge al la Peter Green. I was going to put the Burstbuckers in my Ibanez ES175D clone. Does anyone know if they are wax potted? I worry about putting non-potted pups in the Ibanez because it is a true archtop wth the wood bridge plate and all that other mellow jazzy stuff:laugh2: i would be worried about feedback from a non-potted pickup. i know the PAF's on the original ES175D's weren't potted, but i'm not sure Gibson ever intended for their jazz guitars to be played at rockin volume levels :fingersx:

Re: blues question

I've got a 59er (B) Alnico 2 (N) in my semi hollow. It's a great combo IMHO.
I just had to replace the input jack on my Semi Hollow.:eek13: I'm getting pretty good at it now.:D Took me a Lil' over a half hour to do it. I use bakery
string to fish with.

Re: blues question

I've been playing more and more blues lately. One thing I notice, it doesn't seem to matter which of the guitar/pickup combos in my sig that I grab - just that I dial in "Fender Tweed" on my J-Station. Nails it every time. ;)

Re: blues question

Using a PG and a A II in my 335, but I replaced the chamfered polepieces in the PG with standard Gibson polepieces---gets a nice Freddie King/Luther Tucker thing going on. However, I just got a early-mid 60's T-Top and that's going in next...the hotter versions (7.5K +) of those pu's really sound good in the semi-hollows to me; lots of fat bite.
