Bogen GS150?

My friend just gave me his son's Bogen GS150 among other guitar stuff (Marshall JCM900 SL-X 2100!). I don't know what this thing is and it was 'if you don't want this stuff it's going in the trash'. FREE guitar stuff? Hell yeah, even if I don't know what it is. Well I got it home and started looking at it, the front has mic 1-6 knobs, an 8 band EQ yadda, yadda, yadda. I'm thinking 'ok, it's gotta be a mic amp, the thing weighs like 30 pounds'. I look on the back and there is a million (not really) wire terminals with the screw clamps like on a car stereo amp (for the fork style crimp-on connectors). This threw me off because I thought mics only come with 1/4" or XLR connections (there is 4 XLR also). There's a telephone paging input on it? WTF? Can anyone tell me exactly what I got?

SS, but might be fun to try and overdrive it (it's got a master volume)! sounds like you'll need some weird adaptors to be able to use. wonder how the contour would sound with a guitar.

Found out it is 150 watts! Since it was free and I DEFINATELY don't sing I'll probably do something crazy with it. I need to get another speaker for my cab first since it's only rated at 40w. Been looking at the Carvin GT12, it's 100w which will work with the Marshall when I get it up & going.

Dankstar, could help you convert that amp. I would imagine that him being such an awesome dude, he would throw a few bits of info in your direction, if you need it.

Unfortunately, my converting skills consist of finding former TV repairmen that like to tinker and asking them to put on 1/4 inch ins and outs so I don't fry myself, hehe. But he may be able to find adapters instead, save a few bucks there.

Re: Bogen GS150?

Are not those kind of a powered, mic pre-amp.?
Not going to be anything thing tube in there. Would be a good way to get your hands dirty. See what you can do with one of the mic inputs. You will need to educate yourself on SS amps, but it might be fun.
Maybe get a schem for a SS Peavey or Fender and see what you can do.
Best

Re: Bogen GS150?

I don't want to toot my own horn, but if you want to convert it, I do have an AD in Mechanical Eng., and Electronics tech.
Between myself and a few other members, we could get that thang rockin' for you. But, most of the time I just like to keep my mouth shut. There are quite a few guys on here that know way more than I do. I would listen to them over me.

Re: Bogen GS150?

I'll take you up on your offer, I've got a couple old muzak amps that are 100w SS, super heavy and look like stereo receivers, VU meter and all, and they've got huge transformers. Can't think of the brand right off hand. I kept them thinking I could make a useable PA for vocals, but making one into a guitar amp might be neato. I'll pop up some pics tonight.

I'll need pics of the inside and outside of the inputs on the front, and outputs on the back. I'll need a couple more pics as we go, but yeah, shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Bogen GS150?

You'd have to add a resistor or something, XLR is lo-z, 1/4" is hi-z. I'm sure these guys know what to do.

Re: Bogen GS150?

Can I undo one of the mic inputs and solder a 1/4" in there for a guitar?

Yes, but I need to know if it has phantom power or not. I'm looking, but can't find much info on the inards. I'm trying to find a schematic.

Edit: It has a switchable phantom power. This will get a little more complex but, not too bad. I just need to see it so I can trace it down.

That's a wild little amp. I'd just take it to a tech. Unless you know your way around a PCB and what components do what, I would not suggest you try this yourself.

I'm not going to take it to a tech, hardly even want it but it was free. If wiring a 1/4" requires ANYTHING special I'm not going to do it, I have a Vypyr 30 and I can take that Bogen tech $$ and invest it into a tech to get the Marshall going.
