Bogner Alchemist $700

you guys know anything about it? any first hand experience? opinions?

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

First off, it is a Line 6 amp....very little to do with Bogner except the name.

I have played one, it was OK. It didn't wow me, but I wasn't offended either.

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

I played one for only about twenty minutes which is really not enough time to learn anything or judge it fairly. All I can say is that it seemed to do a medium gain thing very well and somewhat reminded me of a Mesa Express 5:50.

Bogner-designed amp circuits - Line 6 builds it and put the effects in. ;)

I like the amp a lot. Kind of a medium-gain amp that'll get into hard rock if you push it with a pedal or whatnot. There's some pretty cool sounds in there. I find myself playing a lot of classic rock and blues and Jeff Beck-y stuff on it. I like the switchable wattage and the effects are clean and satisfying.

Overall on a scale of 1 (I'd rather play my electrics unplugged) to 10 (ZOMG TONAL NIRVANA) I'll give the amp a 7.

this is starting to sound interesting. theres also a mesa road king 4x12 cab for sale.. i think theyd make quite a pair. I need a new amp...

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

My friend just bought a Bogner Alchemist. I played it the other day and I LOVE IT!!! He changed the tubes and he's running it through a Stone Age 2x12 cab. The clean channel has great tone, you can get crystal clean to acdc distortion out of it. But the gain channel is AMAZING!!! I like it even better the the Orange Rocker 30 I played. The Bogner by far my favorite amp I've ever played.

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

Alchemist? Bah. I dont think too much of them. They are ok but much better choices exist. Egnater makes competitively priced amps far better than the Alchemist. But whatever works you know.

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

I am aware of the "designed..." aspect, I have played quite a few Bogners and own one...that is not a Bogner by any stretch ;)

I also have played quite a few Bogners and currently own an Ecstasy 101b. ;)

The Alchemist is not an amp in the same class as the US stuff, but it's a good amp in its own right. It's got a few trademark Bognerish sounds in it. If I really had to draw a comparison between the Alchemist and a "real" Bogner, I'd say it reminded me of a smaller, less powerful Shiva.

i agree on all accounts. i have owned 2 bogners myself a shiva and a uberschall. while the alchemist is not of the same quality they are cool amps. i got a lot of the sounds i used to get from my shiva out of one.

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

While this amp is not a priority, as I made up my mind and am getting a fender hot rod deville, if the price got any lower, i might get it.

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

okay as a more contemporary sounding, bassmanish (?) uprev

it is KILLED by the new 6505 112 (w/ spring tank)....which kills all those little modelers out there, too, just as adroitly. That is a weird word, adroitly.:scratchch

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

btw if yer willing to spend Alchemist-$$$ then you could spend just a little more and get a LOT more in the Bogner Goldfinger 45, the only post-2000 Bogner I really like for the money. It's affordable and not terribly much more than the Alchemist line. I played one yesterday. Nice sounding, all kinds of sounds, cool triple yin-yang tolex patterns, and with the matching open back 212, too! I wanna say 1400 US for the head, I don't think it included the cab.

correction to my last, for myself; having played it some more with more guitars: yuck. Awful, awful, awful distortion. Scratchy, fizzy treble. I think it developed tube issues since the other day when I played it, but that's not surprising since tubes SUCK these days. But, I take back what I wrote. The only Bogs I like were made in the 90s. Hard to find tubes that can handle them though. Nice to have met ya though, Goldfinger, what are those, 6v6s? I liked you at first, huge clean. Like most Bogners, lotta weird switches, too. One of them turns it from quiet to super-loud, "69 - 80". The yin-yang tolex is the coolest thing about it. Affordable yes, but no thanks.

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

I might be saving up for something to go above and beyond my night train, and am considering the alchemist. Chinese line 6? Doesn't bother me. Line 6 doesn't get slammed for quality control like bugera, and shoot, maybe I'll buy an "extended warranty." The design of the circuit is bogner's, right? That's what one is potentially buying one for.
Clips I've heard of it are all pretty good. Not quite the same flavor as a mesa, but it hints at it. I'd like to play one, and see if the half power switch is useable. not all "pentode/triode" and similar switches sound great.

It's definitely useable, but don't expect it to roll much off in terms of volume. According to Reinhold, it just changes the tone to a brown sound. Honestly, I think it's a great option to have.

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

Yeah I've used a few amps with half power switches, and the volume change is minimal in all cases.
I like the way dynamics and presence change. So far I can say that triodes can do more of a brown sound kinda thing, my Vox's triode mode with the tone stack disengaged is great for a smoother kind of overdrive than running pentode.
The vox does this better than the blackheart I used to own, and I don't remember what other amp I tried but it's switch just smothered the tone of the amp.

hehe, I only use my Orange Rocker 30 and an ext cab now instead of my Alchemist. The Bogner has the amazing cleans that the Orange does not, but I'm luvin' the big time crunch flavor of the Orange. The Alchemist is not going anywhere, I may go back to it if and when my taste changes, i really did like the tones I got.

Re: Bogner Alchemist?

I'd also be interested in that one.
I've seen the following inside-pic on thegearpage.

doesn't look to bad, but i wonder that somebody playin around with different
caps various positions is selling that baby so cheap.
