Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

Can users of these amps compare/contrast them? I've heard a lot of good things about both, but have never gotten to play Bogner.

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

Bogner is much more pricy and high end from what i've heard. Never played one. They are very different sorts of amps. Also which models of each are you interested in comparing?

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

Both Bogner and Mesa have a signature sound. The Bogner is more like a super-Marshall, and the Mesa is more like a super-Peavey.

Bogner Ecstasy is everything any EL-34 amp can do. It's limitless....like a room of amps in one.
Bogner Uberschall is like the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb in a 2 channel head. I haven't heard any amp that's got a heavier gain channel, and the clean channel is still better than most Mesas.
Bogner Shiva is what you wish Marshall 2 channel amps were. Great OD and great cleans.
Bogner Metropolis is every EL-84 amp rolled into one.
Bogner Duende is every 6V6 amp rolled into one.

The one that has "Bo" in its name. It's up to you to figure out which works better for you.

A super-Peavey? Peavey doesn't sound anything like Mesa, including the XXX. Mesa is more of a super-Fender, except for the Rectifier, which was in it's own little world before everyone (including Bogner) started create their own version of that sound.

If anything, Bogner is the super Marshall/Peavey - the Überschall is like one of the baddest ass 5150's ever. :laugh2:

You're right. My bad. I suffered a momentary Beer$ attack! :fingersx: :chairfall

Mesa started off by being a hotrodded Fender sound, but it's hard to say that nowadays. I group them more with Rivera, Peavey, Soldano, and other companies that build highgain 6L6 amps, even though all of them have their own tone.

You know, these.... "Which is Better" kind of make me laugh. I've been guilty of this too.
But, honestly, IMO there is NO WAY that someone elses opinion can replace hearing the items in question with your own ears. What someone thinks is the Bees Knees of heavy gain tone might sound like a box o bees to another. Believe it or not, some folks aren't crazy about the Fender Clean tone. Other's think Marshall isn't "Gainey" enough.
Point is, I'm assuming you have an idea of the kind of soundscape you want to create.
Then there are pedals, guitars, and of course choices of PUP's.
When all is said and done the quest for "YOUR" tone could very well be a long albeit fun journey. But a journey none the less.
I have only recently come acrossed the BASE tone i'm after, Guitar & Amp.
Pedals to come.

There is no BETTER IMO, some folks get it done with a Pod, others need a Dumble.
Play a bunch get what makes you wet.
Good luck to you and your search, let your ears be your guide.

True. I'm pretty sure that all of those (including the Rectifier but minus the 5150) are using versions of Soldano's original preamp designs.

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

I think most people would be amazed to hear what some careful EQ will do...I'd say 75% of what differences exist between amps, not to mention guitars, distortion pedals and certainly speakers can be characterized by specific levels across the 60-5Khz band. Obviously this will not affect the character or layeredness of the distortion but for clean stuff certainly.

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

Apples and Oranges

but I will tell you a different angle -

SIMPLICITY - BOGNER, even the Ecstasy is relatively easy to set, pop a mic in front and you can rock stadiums or record your own Sgt Pepper's

Bogner have sweeter mids, yet have Marshall Mojo

Mesa is not my fave rhythm amp, not even the 2c+. It has a huge fat mid quality and saturation (incl the Rectos) which is THE sound of the late 90s/Early 2000. Great amp for lead players. The cleans on some Mrk series and the Blue Angel rock.

With Mesas you need a manual to set it. YOu will be tweaking a LOT, and you will be tube swapping a lot. This is not always a good thing.

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

I personally have never been a fan of Boogies. I have always found it impossible to get a usable sound out of both channels. I know a lot of people that love them and they can get good sound out of them. I can't.

I own a Bogner Shiva and IMHO it is the best amp for Blues/Country and hard rock I have come across. I also own a Super Reverb(1968) and a Deluxe Reverb (1967) and the cleans on the Bogner smoke my Fenders. The Drive channel is very versatile, but I am still tweaking it a little. I was using a 50W Marshall 900 and the Bogner has much more dynamics to it, very responsive. Your volume controls (there are 3) have a huge affect on the tone of the amp as well as the volume control on the guitar. Set the Drive channel for some nasty OD and roll the volume back and it cleans right up. Great amps!

Yup. I have an old Mk II. One great sound at a time. 2 pretty good ones at a time.

Plenty loud, tho. :)

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

I pick mesa because I can't afford Bogner....lol...

In all honesty, both sound very very good. I've had a couple of mesa's, never had a bogner but played on a buddy's a lot....they both do what they do well.

Just play 'em man. My biggest lesson I learned in life was to never worry about how good gear that I've never played may be. I work really hard to put together the best gear that I've had the opportunity to hear and play and know that it's good. If I haven't played it, then it's all hype :) Hope that makes sense

My opinion: like most things, there's no clear "better" amp. It depends on the guitar, the style, who you want to sound like, etc. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

I am usually more impressed with amps that can get that distortion which is between clean and crunchy - that is one significant reason why people like the Fender Blackface sound. The older Boogies were pretty good at this, but the newer Boogie technology is more focussed on either spanky clean or high gain. I think that Bogner amps generally get a higher caliber distortion (more harmonic) and that makes them more versatile, and sweeter to listen to, with nicer sounding in-between tones :D

I would take a Shiva or XTC over a Recto amp.

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

I have a Mesa .50 cal+ and I friggin love it, I can actually get both a really good clean AND distorted sound, even though they share the same eq. . . . actually this has only really happened since i discovered that the Gain knob actually turns down and the mid knob rurns up :6: (plus having the 5 nband eq only on the distortion channel helps alot. That said however I've always wanted to check out a Bogner Shiva, probably my "it" amplifier of the moment

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

I say we have Randall Smith and Reinhold Bogner face off in Celeb Death Match and see who comes out on top.

Bogner is a tall German dude, but very skinny, I fear Randall may have an edge in this regard, but his age may hurt him. However, I feel that either of them could take out Jim Marshall with a single blow to the head.

Re: Bogner and Mesa Boogie: which is better?

Ok, lesson learned. Never post a "which is better" thread again. Instead, I should have just said compare/contrast to avoid posts about using my ears (as if I didn't know that). Anyhow, thanks for the useful info. It's always fun to learn more and more about products.
