There is only simulator in the Dist Station and Machine, the rest are normal ones, anyways my Dist Station does not do anything bad to my signal when bypassed.
As for the samples....differs from amp to amp I think

If clips are what you're after, have you checked out the clips at the top of Keeley's Metal Zone/Twilight Zone page?

Checked out the Keeley MT-2. Interesting but it has too much bass and it seems incredibly compressed. I know that as distortion increases, compressed sound is bound to happen, but this one sounds more compressed than most do. Not a bad pedal and it does have a very bogner-like tone. Reminds me of the awesome distortion you hear on Rosetta Stoned by TOOL, but the bottom is quite a bit chunkier.

Modding a Metal Zone is a good idea, but I'd advise you to go with
Indyguitarist Bogner/Diezel mod. Check out this soundclip.
