Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

Hey guys - great forum, this is my first post.

I own a mid 90s bogner xtc 101B and I dig it but I've been hearing some amazing stuff from the splawn quick rod. How do the 2 compare?
Any thoughts on if I ought to trade my xtc for a quick rod?
I really dig that modded marshall tone and it seems that the splawn is more of that tone than the xtc. The bogner seems more fuzzy or thumpy than singing. Some tones I love are slash's, zakk's from NMT, and VH1.

In the bogner I have the stock 34's and chinese 12ax7

I also play a '84 marshall 2210 with 6550 tubes that to me has an amazing singing lead tone with the reverb on, and a '89 2555 and '96 2555SL.
All great heads but all so different...
I play rock n roll and my guitars are les paul standard and prs mccarty.

Hey BryanWelcome to the forum bro!
You own one of the most beatifull sounding and mind melting amp on the planet. So please stop writing ,change your tubes ,re-bias that thing and go playing!:D

Re: Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

Isn't a splawn already a hi gain mod type of amp though?

Yes. There is absolutely no need to further mod a Splawn for high gain. They're kind of based on the modded Marshall philosophy in the first place.

The only Bogner I've ever played was an Uberschall - which was cool - but I think if you go Splawn you'll be very happy.

Re: Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

definitely do NOT do a straight up trade your Bogner is worth quite a bit more than even a NEW Splawn. Sell it, then buy a Splawn ;)

IF you want marshall sound and you aren't getting it from the XTC sell it, new tubes aren't going to make it sing a whole lot more

True, that. A think a brand new Splawn Quickrod is around $1800 these days.

Re: Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

Retube it with JJ EL-34's and GT12AX7C's. I also have a mid 90's white chassis Ecstasy, and it's been my main amp since 2001. I haven't ever come across a channel switching amp that I like better.

Splawns have a more bitey sound like the Jubilee, which is more like a hotrodded JCM 800. The Bogner is more like a devastating power section like an old Superbass with a preamp section that's as close to limitless as you can get......like Marshall modeling clay.

Bogners pound tubes with extreme voltage, so throwing some JJ's biased to 36mA is the way to go. I've experimented with a lot of pre tubes in it, and I still think Chinese pre's sound right in it.....but for the first 3, get some GT C's. Just use whatever you have for the other 3. I put a JJ ECC83's in the other 3 positions for clean, FX, and PI.

If you like the Splawn, get one, but don't sell your prime era Bogner. They sound amazing. I hope you have a Bogner 4-12 w/Vin 30's, because that cab is half the tone. The Bogner cab is essential if you have a Bogner amp.

I just remembered that on their website at some point they offered different type of mods you amp to come with, one of them mentioned "high-gain"

You might be thinking of the Marshall mods that Splawn performs (or used to - I don't know if he has time for that anymore since starting his own amp line). Scott Splawn has modded about a million Marshalls for high-gain.

+1. Joe won't steer you wrong.

Re: Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

Thanks for the feedback, I have to admit I am splitting hairs here. I love the bogner and I do get great tone with just a les paul standard plugged straight into her but the splawn QR clips have me drooling. I have always wanted a modded marshall since it seems like every gets their marshalls modded. Even slash's "stock" jubilee or 800s seem to be modded from what i've read from his tech adam day. On contraband he used a jcm 800 modded by mike morin as well as a few other heads. Slash's tone is god like, its just perfect. I was checking out the caswell #39 mod but its pretty expensive, and who knows what that tone sounds like in person.

Re: Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

I have one more thing to say - and it probably won't help you a whole lot, but

The Splawns sound exactly like the clips in person. I've never used an amp that recorded so well. Of course the sound varies depending on room, guitar, etc. but you can feel safe in knowing that the clips on Scott's website are a very accurate depiction of what those amps do.

Re: Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

Some of the clips sound tight but lack a heavy low end sound. Is that just the eq'ing of the clips? Or can get some heavy low end action? If I go to the splawn website once more I am gonna be in some serious trouble with my bank. I'd love to get the QR in a classic white head. Gears 1 and 2 have me drooling. I was up late last night considering a way to finance one...luckily the closest place to hollywood that sells 'em are in the OC and 30 something miles from me.

Re: Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

I've been drooling over the clips too! Turns out a distant friend in my town has one. I'm trying to reach him to see what he thinks of them. I saw Stephen Pearcy on tour with WASP and a few others in Cleveland at the House Of Blues. his guitarist had a Splawn of some sort and it sounded incredible. Moddified Marshall thats for sure...........

The Splawns can definitely do huge low-end. I'm looking to see if I still have a clip I did...

That's a clip I posted in an old thread. You're hearing a P-90 Junior -> Splawn Pro Mod -> Splawn 4x12 cab -> SM57 on-axis micing one of the Emi Man-O-Wars.

Re: Bogner vs. Marshall vs. Splawn

Yeah, ok that answered that question!
I see you got the pro mod, any real difference between that and QR besides the 88's?
I love how splawn have the volume boosts on the respective channels, because I love just plugging into the head and playing. Especially at gigs when those pedals are just waiting to trip ya.

Well, the word is that the QR has more of the Marshall midrange thing going on and the PM is more modern-sounding, but I don't hear that big of a difference. The PM might have more low-end to the tone, but they all have that awesome chewy midrange chunk going on. That's pretty much what drew me to them in the first place.
