Re: Boss DD3 vs DD7 vs MXR Carbon Copy
The DD-3 is a fairly classic unit. A nice, plain but warm digital delay sound. As much as I love modulation I will openly admit that more stuff works without it (eg using modulated delay on lead parts can sometimes lead to stuff sounding kind of weird and out of tune). Even better that you can have it modded by Analogman or.. really any of the bigger pedal guys in the future to bring out it's absolute magic. It's great for a simple, baseline delay sound.
The Carbon Copy is something special. Like.. the EHX Memory Man is special because of the unique and beautiful way that it's chorus rings out, and the Carbon Copy is unique for the beautiful character of it's vibrato circuit. Some of the best modulation I've ever heard on a delay, and the darkness helps it blend into the background of what you're playing and make a beautiful wash of sound. You also have the benefit of some really cool sounds with oscillation. I've sold a LOT of delay pedals and yet the CC is always a constant on my board. It has a special something that nothing else can quite match. It has this special quality to it, where you hear the notes shimmer behind you, you hear them brush against the edge of oscillation and fly up to a heavenly wash of high-pass filter sounds. It's an imperfect sound, I've heard delays which are a lot 'better' (like the VapoUr Trail) and have much higher tonal consistency, but something in my ears or in my head constantly prefers the wash of my CC. Just my personal opinion of course, a lot of people have said it's too dark, or oscillates too early. Most people seem rather consistent in the thought that the modulation is amazing though.
Another option (wait another option after that glowing review?) would be to get a TC Electronic Flashback Delay. They're simple, they sound good, and have a lot of modelled sounds meaning that you can try a whole bunch of different delay types and go with whatever eventually catches your ear. Extremely potent technology in that toneprint app.
