Boss FBM-1 Bassman as a preamp?

I've heard this is a decent amp in a box pedal when used in the same manner as a distortion pedal, but how does it sound plugged straight into the return of the effects loop?

Well, I think it works great in front of the amp, but I’ve never tried it in the loop. Frankly, the thought of doing that with a Boss pedal saddens me, even though it would probably do it really well. We are a fickle market.

I've done this...it is pretty good, but it is an older modeler. Newer designs sound better (like the Tech 21 Blonde). I've also used one direct to a mixer...and it is no actual Bassman.

I don't think any of the Fender modeling pedals work great as a stand-alone overdrive. The preamp in series with the host amp's own preamp makes some weird stuff happen, in a not-good way. I would certainly prefer a stand-alone OD pedal. It does work well replacing an amp's entire preamp, patched into the effects return.
