BOSS ME-50 or?

High Voltologist
What is a good FX unit to run in the loop, must be able to go on the floor.

I've looked at the ME-50 and for the most part it appears to do what I need but any other suggestions or reasons to stay the hell away from it for some reason.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

I'm a fan of the ME-50. It's a solid unit that sounds good and is easy to use. You don't need a degree to operate it.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

I didn't like the ME50 mainly because when you switch patches there's a signal cut for about a quarter of a second... the unit just stops passing signal while it switches over. That was back in '04 or so, though. Anyone know if Boss has since fixed this? The effects themselves sounded average.

This is true of mine also. But it's never been a problem for me since I don't use presets. I just work all the knobs in realtime. But a valid concern if that's how you'll use it.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

The ME-50 isn't designed to be ran in the effects loop- it is a front end device. It doesn't lend itself well to effects loops.
But I love the unit- it does all I need it too, but I rarely use or write any programs,( I only use the program section on two songs) I just use it as a collection of all in one stomp boxes.

It was a problem for me, because I was looking for a unit to play live with. Can't have that signal-cutting going on live! But I suppose it would work well enough for a bedroom-jammer application.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

I tried one recently and didnt care for it much. Average effects ,lousy OD's. It is a good concept and does do it all but I just wasnt impressed. I decided a delay and phaser or chorus would get me by just fine and take up a lot less room. This thing is pretty big but built very rugged it appeared to me.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

If it did not have the delay between patches, I would really like it. I use it live for Ring Mod and Whammy FX as well as a bit of compression, take out the fricken signal cut, and it would meet all my needs. I like Line 6 multi stomps, I run everything through the input jack, never liked FX loops....

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

Well if it cuts out during patch changes that pretty much screws the pooch on that.

It doesn't have to go through the loop I just figured it was better that way.

I had an older Digitech (RP-7 maybe) and it sucked so bad through a live rig it was a joke. I would imagine they have gotten significantly better, they'd have too have.

I need delay, an octaver, an envelope filter type of effect of some sort, and I would love to have phase and flange as well. I don't really need OD or compressor type stuff but I figure they're all likely to have those.

What else is out there? I am not running a pedal board. I actually can't stand pedals, they're nice toys but for gigging I can't deal with them. A powered FX processor that is foot controlled would be fine though and a lot more manageable for me.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

For multi-effect units, I like Boss and DigiTech, especially the Boss GTs and the DigiTech GNX series. The old Boss GT-3 is awesome if you can find on on eBay or something.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

I would think about running a pedal board,I found one for 50$ used and it is the best purchase for live play I have made outside of the Weber Mass. If you got the line 6 modulator box and then a separate delay be it Line 6 or another, (I paid 40 for an Ibanez stomp delay and it just kicks ass) as well as an EH octave pedal, I think it would ultimately do a better job. I wanted the ME50 to meet my needs, but it ultimately didn't for all my wants.

. . . i don't think an multi was made to run in the loop !

All the old folk around here who has either the ME-50 or GT6/8's run it into the fron of their amps !

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

If the latency between patches didn't screw the pooch hard enough, here's another un-lubed slam....

There are no pedals for bank up/down.... they're freaking BUTTONS on the top. You can set it up with pedals, but you have to buy additional expression pedals.

Also, the AC adapter must be purchased separately.

I'd recommend a Boss GT, and just turn off the amp modeling.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

The boss gt8 is setup to run in front of the amp and then another input/output for running modulation and such in the effects loop, get it.

Re: BOSS ME-50 or?

Ahh I'll just stay with what I am doing now

GTR - - - - - - - >AMP

Thanks guys but way too much hassle for a the few things I need FX for.

I think one or two well-chosen pedals would be your best bet. All you have to do is stomp on 'em! :D

Having said that, there is a lot to be said for guitar, cord, amp!
