Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

That's very cool Mike! :) I agree, that 1960B is definitely part of the Marshall tone equation. It has nice depth. I hope you have lots of fun with it bro. Hehe, that's cool that your neighbors are hearing it.. must have volume for true Marshall tone :D

I currently have g12h and g12m speakers in an x pattern.

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

good news. i was having second thoughts of buying a 4x12 because they're not easily transportable but the sound quality makes up for that.

booya!

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Cabs are definitely a part of the equation. I started playing guitar, using nothing but halfstacks, and to me, anything else is small, boxy, or loose sounding. I play single coil bluesrock most of the time, but also love humbuckers and a heavy rock/metal tone too. For that, 4-12's are mandatory. I usually use all Vin 30's, but my Jubilee cabs are a crisscross of Vin 30/G75T, and they have a more crunchy vibe than the smoother Bogner cabs. For blues, I usually use open back 2-12 combos, because strats and teles can benefit from the sound leaving the back of the amp.

The best sounding cabs I've heard are the Bogner 4-12 and 2-12, but I assure you, the 4-12 stomps on the 2-12 in every way. Anyone who tells you a 2-12 can sound as good as a 4-12 is wrong. I've got both of them sitting side by side, and while the 2-12 is nice for keeping the volume lower, the 4-12 owns it when it comes to overall tone.

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

I know the feeling as well. I had a Marshall AVT150H Amp with both matching cabinets. The VS412A and B cabinets, 4x12 in ea. but only 25 watt speakers.
I now have a Marshall JCM2000 TSL100 all tube 100W amp and a 1960AV cabinet with the vintage speakers. There is no comparison at all. The TSL100 with the one cabinet completely blows away the old full stack in every way. The 1960 Vintage cabinet is exactly what you say Mike M.
DEPTH and sound quality is awesome.

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

i've got one :banana" although it's not as nice as that one. it's a jcm900 1960A with g12-75's in it. i got for 300 since it's so beaten up, or tested rather:

the pictures seem to make it look better than it is. there are A BUNCH of rips in the grille. it was a steal and i needed a cab.

i've noticed it does sound a bit grainy and fake. i might put a set of g12h-30's not the heritage. i don't want to spend that much....

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Wow!! Surprised this thread is still around! Thanks all, sounds like I'm in some pretty good company! As you gathered, this is my first 4X12 and the more I play it the more I can understand why people like them so much. What's cool too is the differant elements of tones that I love coming thru. I hear traces of Claptons live tone with Cream and Pages live tone. But what I really hear coming thru is early Billy Gibbons! And I was'nt even trying to get that tone. Stand back about 10' , play the intro to "Tush" and "Just Got Paid" and hot-damn there it is!!!

(I've got a Marshall. I've got a Marshall. )

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Congrats, bro. Nothing like a big 4x12 moving the hairs on your legs....LOL. My 4x12 is an old Music Man from the 70's with the stock alnico speakers. Rated at 130 watts total. The sucker has taken everything I've thrown at it and then some. I got it for free from the store owner I worked for. Played through many Marshall cabs, just never owned one.

There is one 2x12 that I've heard that sound as good as a 4x12, the Genz-Benz 2x12 G-Flex. It sounds HUGE!

There's a few 2-12's nowadays that sound great, and usually better than a cheapo 4-12. But.....if you level the playing field and compare a 4-12 and 2-12 from the same company, you definitely hear the difference. Try a Genz Benz G-Flex 4-12! Just make sure you have a truck to move it! :fingersx:

I hear a lot of talk about mixing 2 types of speakers, but I rarely hear about 4 different speakers in the same 4-12. That's one thing I've always wanted to try, especially since the complex swirl of tones would make all the frequencies jump out. I'd like to try my 4-12 cab with a Greenback, Vin 30, G75T, and H30. Then, you could choose any of the 4 to mic.
