Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

But it's not all about how well you play the guitar. I love both artists from a songwriting standpoint and feel that they are about equal in this respect. Both have a bunch of great tunes and are a credit to their professions. I certainly think they are both a huge leap above what usually comes out of Nashville. Eric

That was kind of the gist of the thread; not really a comparison.

But this thread also shows an overwhelming love for BP & a semi-loathing of KU....and I'm not sure why, other than the pretty boy "Pop Star" label. :dunno:

I appreciate them both....equally :beerchug:

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

I grew up hating country music (which is strange because I love folk and bluegrass) but these two (along with a few others) have literally forced me to pay attention and develop an appreciation. My tele gas is definitely on the upswing because of these guys.

Eric

Me too.

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

Not a big country fan - but I do appreciate both of these artists. If I had to vote, I would probably go for Urban. The thing is, I can see that Paisley is better, but he's too country for me - Urban sounds more rockish - which I like.

That's cool Terry. Sorry I was kinda the 1st one to start comparing. I am cool with both for sure. I just personally don't see them as equal on most points.

What do you consider essential Keith Urban so I can check it out?

No man, it's cool. I see them both as far & above most of the clowns that are STARS in country. I dig them both & dig their styles a lot. I guess I'm more rock/twang like Urban but wish I could play that Tele like Paisley

Essential KU.........if he had a Greatest Hits album, it would be perfect :D

The thing is, I like a lot of his tunes, but albums overall are so-so....I think he puts too many songs on a disc, if that's possible.

The one before his latest is good...."BE HERE"...on a whole, it's a good one.

On his first, he does an instrumental called "Rollercoaster"......it might change your mind about his playing prowess !!!

It's a short clip, but it'll give ya' an idea :D

I'm going to say that although they are techinically in the same genre, it's like comparing apples and oranges. they are both great in their own way. KU does the Lindsey Buckingham rock thing. That works for him. BP does the traditional country shred thing. Definitely not the same. Their sounds are not even the same; rock tone v. country tone.

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

Anyone know what pedals they use? I saw Paisley over the summer & it looked like his pedal use was minimal; Urban I've only seen in videos or with John Fogerty on tv & it looked like he had a fair amount going on a pedalboard.

Actually Brad's effects rack is pretty extensive..it's on his website under gear, but I'll post here anyway...

Essential Keith Urban is the album he put out with his band before his cocaine addiction split the band up and before his solo projects. The name of the band is "The Ranch" and it's been rereleased as "Keith Urban in The Ranch" and you can find it at most major music stores. It's the greatest thing he's ever put out and I'veheard every cd he's put out since. Definitely pick that one up.

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

Keith is good, but there again just another pretty boy with good chops and good rock/country tone.

Brad is the first person in longer than I can remember that has come into the mainstream country scene that deserves to get the attention he gets as a singer, songwriter and especially guitar player. He is an absolute master guitar slinger.

What a lot of people don't realize is that Keith has done all those hardcore country things too. He's been on the road (before going solo) as a guitarist for Garth Brooks, Dixie Chicks, and many others! He can change styles as the need calls for it. I don't really see that diversity in Brad (and Brad is a MAJOR favorite of mine!!!). Keith has been around the block. The man is in his early 40's and has played almost all of his life and has found what he loves, but he has been there and done all the other styles (in Australia, and then in America when he came here).

Not to say he's better than Brad, but they are equal talents in my book. Different flavors of an AMAZINGLY great coffee :)

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

Are you serious?

They are both tremendously talented country music artists as well as hellacious guitarists.

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

I really like Paisley, not only for his awesome tone and picking, but his tounge in cheek lyrics are pretty funny.
As for Keith, well, you give the guy some credit- after all, he's doin' Nicole Kidman!

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

What little country I do listen to I say "Brad Paisley all the way!"

Well I spent a few hours today tuned into the local modern country station, to see what I've been missing. Maybe they didn't play any KU or BP during that time period, as I don't recall BP or KU being named, but I didn't hear any hellacous guitar playing during that whole time. The guitars were always in a acompany the vocals application mode on every single song, and usually 1/2 buried in the mix. The only times the guitars stepped out of support the singer mode, was during fade outs, and then for only one or two bars, if that long. A few rather interesting licks lasted litterally a few seconds long.

Listening to the modern country station that long about drove me nuts, with so many female singers singing; what sounded like the same song with diffrent lyrics. What really started driving me nuts, was the lack of a "groove" on virtually every tune. The drums were very simplistic, straight beats with virtually no syncopation. They could of been drum machines ???

There's just not enough black music in this music for me, and I'm a country boy.

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

I am going to be completely honest and state my opinion boldly.

I like both guys, however, I truly 1000% know that Brad could walk all over Keith, eat him for lunch, spit him out and kick him in the nads as a guitar player.

I think a local music store owner put it well when he said that Keith is a rocker at heart whereas Brad is country at heart.

I think Brad is more unique in his style and has an even more unique tone that is instantly recognizable.

Keith is good, but there again just another pretty boy with good chops and good rock/country tone.

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

I like both of these guys a lot, along with Vince Gill, Lyle Lovett and his guitarists, and Dwight Yoakam. That's almost all the current country I can listen to for more than half a song. I haven't bought an Urban CD yet, but I probably will. I bought Paisley's "Mud on the Tires", and have to say that sometimes his humor and sappiness begin to grate on me. There are some excellent tunes on that CD, and great picking throughout, but some of that stuff should have stayed on the cutting room floor so to speak.

I always try to catch both of these guys when they do the talk shows or show up on CMT, except for those unbearable awards shows -- nothing and nobody is good enough to get me to sit through those.

Re: Brad Paisley vs. Keith Urban

I found out yesterday that Brad is coming to Dallas in May on his 2007 Tour.
I am so there, with the wife of course. :D
