Brass Ibanez Artist

Re: Brass Ibanez Artist

I've seen it, it's at a local shop. Haven't done anything other than look at it. It is pretty cool looking but can't be more than a conversation piece really. Looks like it's got a fair amount of wear though.

Re: Brass Ibanez Artist

Wait, that's supposed to be solid brass?

The specific gravity of brass is 8400 kg per cubic meter . . .

Let's estimate that the guitar is 12 inches by 12 inches (30 cm) with a 1.5 inch thickness (3.8 cm) we get a volume of about .3*.3*.038 = .00342 cu m.

8400*.00342 = 28 kg (61 lbs) . . . just for the body . . . woah.

Re: Brass Ibanez Artist

If you watch the video linked to on the ebay page, the guy says it's 76 lbs. Holy fawk

Re: Brass Ibanez Artist

Man, that is really weird. I'm going to tell a little story that is true, but is unlikely to be believed.

Back in the early 1980s I lived in Sydney but took to the road for a while with a backpack, bumming up and down the east coast of Australia. After a while i ended up in Melbourne, hanging out with some mates of mine who had a touring cover band and were based around Melbourne at that time.

One night i was just wandering around in the city when i passed a music shop. I stopped to look in the window because something caught my eye. It was one of the new-ish (at that time) Ibanez Artists, except the one displayed in the window was different, and that's why it had caught my eye. This thing was made of brass !!! I will never forget it, because my first thought was ... "How the heck is the raised platform in the window display able to hold the weight ?! " I think there was a card on or next to the guitar with some writing, but i can't remember what it said (eh, it was thirty years ago).

So either the guitar in the link is well-travelled, or it's not the only one in the world. Perhaps it was being used as a promotional device at Ibanez dealers around the world at the time, I don't know. But I do remember seeing it in a Melbourne store all those years ago.

It could be possible that an older Melbourne forum member may be able to verify this, maybe Wahwah, Will S-T or Pontiac Jack, although PJ hasn't been around in recent times. But i know i saw it .... you just don't forget seeing a production model guitar that's been made out of brass ... I mean back then, it was new and shiny, no patina from ageing. In the lights of the city, that thing looked like a king or queen sitting there in the window, you couldn't walk past without noticing it.

Wow, that is really cool, but subtract $12 because it seems to be missing three of the original knob covers.

I think I would sit down while playing it.

Re: Brass Ibanez Artist

Instead of selling it, they should do a sort of a raffle. Charge a certain amount per try, and the first person who can play it for 3 45min sets, standing up, strap only, gets to keep it.

Re: Brass Ibanez Artist

Copper and aluminum aren't magnetic either but we use them for shielding. Fender uses brass plates for shielding in some instruments. :)

Re: Brass Ibanez Artist

I* think that was a one-off thing they built for their NAMM show booth, not meant to be a full production model (that is unless a lot of masochistic guitarists wanted them).

Re: Brass Ibanez Artist

That one's been on and off eBay for ages.

Probably could sustain for a couple of years at a time.
