brazilian maple body?

Re: brazilian maple body?

According to this graphic from Wikipedia, Brazil is not known for growing Maple. I would buy Mahogany and Rosewood, but I'm not sold on Maple. Notice how it grows in the same same latitudes globally.

well id go with the latter considering most of what he has sold is custom made pick guard from dif types of wood.

Re: brazilian maple body?

Ahh guess we shall see when it shows up. I asked if he was sure it was brazilian maple.....and i quote....Dear waybeyondempty,

Hi

Didn't see this 2nd message or I would have combined my replies. Yes I am sure it's Brazilian maple. I bought 2 bodies about 7yrs ago from a maker who did all exotic wood bodies. I found this description for you:

Brazilian Maple from South America has pale cream colors to
yellowish cream colors. Goiabao's grain is very clear with
almost no grain variation. Typically those who want a domestic
look with a touch of exotic flare choose Brazilian Maple. It
ranks at 1500 on the janka hardness scale vs 1260 for Red
Oak.

Re: brazilian maple body?

I dont mind so much the heaviness as it wont be played live alot. I do mind the warping thing. That could suck balls. my question now is what neck wood would sound good with an all maple body. mahogany maybe?

Re: brazilian maple body?

Brazilian maple is probably as maple as Japanese Maple... which is to say it's not from the maple family.

I think what people are referring to is actually called Guatambu but is sold as Brazilian Maple in the US. Guatambu has been forested for centuries by Europeans and has largely been devastated as a result. Also known as Pau marfim (Ivory wood). Most of the "Brazilian Maple" comes from Paraguay and Argentina due to the centuries of harvesting in the Guatambu region of Brazil.

It can be used where maple is used... it is dense and closed pore like maple and light in color (sorta yellow) so it can be finished in a variety of hues and shades.

As a tonewood? FUGGETABOUTIT... there's no data on it and it has rarely if ever been used for Brazilian instruments. Brazilians don't consider it a tonewood.

By that same logic Pine wouldn't be considered a tonewood, yet Telecaster purists are enthusiastic about its tonal properties.

With the shortage of traditional premium tonewoods I would rather see manufacturers start using renewable tonewoods than experiment with composites.

Re: brazilian maple body?

thats a nice body. one I wouldnt mind holding close and getting my fingers upon either. but as for a tone wood no it may not be regarded as such but neither is pine and it sounds pretty dang good to my ears. This guitar is meant more to be a tribute to my mother who I lost to breast cancer in 08. would i like it to sound good. well of course. If it doesnt sound great then I hang it on a wall in tribute and be done with it. either way was wondering how to tame the brightness and if anyone had heard of that particular kind of maple cause i hadnt.

couldnt agree more. the fact that alot of people havent used it makes it appeal more to me and curious on how it will sound in the end.

Re: brazilian maple body?

There are other woods that have been used in other instruments that could be used instead.

Maple will always be over the top bright no matter what you do. Ive had maple guitars, and its just the nature of them to be unforgiving.
That said, try a PAFjo, oddly enough.
I dont know why, but its the ultimate balanced pickup , and it kind of tells your amp that its gonna throw up if it doesnt stop being so obnoxious. You'll go to the amp to make adjustments, and it wont be that hard to get somthing moderatley agreeable.
