Brian Monty Blues Queen.

In early March of last year I ordered this great guitar from Brian. For those of you who are unfamiliar with him, Brian is a great Canadian builder and is known for doing great vintage restoration work as well as building his own line of "Gibson" style guitars.

The Blues Queen is a solid "carved" maple guitar with solid sides as well as top & back. It is essentially a 335 with solid back, sides, and rims. It has a Mahogany center block as well as Mahogany neck with Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard. I actually received this guitar about a week after Thanksgiving of last year and just really haven't taken the time to post anything about it.

When I first got it, it needed a good setup and a few other minor tweaks. After playing it for about a month or so I felt the pickups that were in it were a tad too bright. The pickups were hand wound by James Moore in Canada, but he used an Alnico 5 magnet and in this particular guitar I felt they were too bright. So I posted some questions here about which pickups would be suitable and after reading through it all I settled on a set of Gibson 57 classics. I have a set of these in a similar guitar and I felt these would work well. I was right. They have been in the guitar for about 3 weeks now & all of my concerns are gone. The brightness is gone and I now have a beautiful full warm tone with the neck pickup & all notes are clear and defined. The middle position just has a beautiful clean tone and the bridge pickup does what I wanted/needed it to do. I may still raise the action a bit but right now all is good. I tried to attach a few photos here so you can see how beautiful this guitar is. The two natural shots were sent to me from Brian. The picture of me holding the guitar was taken the day I go it. The other shots were taken with my Iphone when I was setting it up & the photo on the bench was taken after the pickups were replaced & the pickguard was installed. It needed a guard as I was scratching the top pretty good. Great axe!!!

Re: Brian Monty Blues Queen.

That's a fantastic looking guitar. And nice choice on the pickguard by the way, I know a lot of people don't like them but it looks wonderful on that guitar.

Re: Brian Monty Blues Queen.

Gorgeous Flame! Wow!! I woulda been tempted to leave it au natural to keep the flame more pronounced. Awesome guitar tho!

I saw a pic of one of his guitars posted somewhere once, but didnt recognize the brand, so didnt know it was a Luthier made axe. Is the work good? I see where he makes LP type, v's and explorer shapes!!! Id love to have a custom made explorer. Always wanted a Hamer, but since they closed.

The work is of very high quality, but what you would expect from a hand made guitar. I'm sure this guitar is NOT the same as others Brian has made. Its an awesome playing and sounding guitar. His neck profile that he uses is modeled after a 59 Les Paul so its chunky but not too big.

Beautiful guitar man!!!

I know Brian's work, so I can say with confidence that I'm sure she plays and sounds as good as she looks.

Glad you got the pickups sorted out and are loving it.

The photos that I have don't do the flame justice. The flames are gorgeous through the finish. Very well done

Beautiful. Last week, I was wondering if I'd missed a thread about this guitar so I looked up your posted threads.

I also dig 57 Classics in a 335, and left the stock ones in my flamed lightburst 335 since they sound good.

I also get to see the print shop that did my posters a few years ago. :fingersx:

Re: Brian Monty Blues Queen.

Ordering a custom guitar is a lot different then buying one off the rack. You know you never know what you are going to get. Fortunately I have known Brian for many years and am well aware of his guitars, so I kind of knew what to expect. The pick challenge I guess is par for the course. I also have a beautiful 335 & I was hoping it would sound close to that. Well after I put in the Alnico II pickups I think it is. Next time I change strings I will raise up the action just a bit. I am getting a very mild amount of fret slap, but I have a tendency to be a bit heavy handed. My tech(Cris Mirabella) teases me and puts a pencil in the strings and shoots it like an arrow. So I guess my preferred action is higher then most.

Re: Brian Monty Blues Queen.

Beautiful guitar. Brian certainly makes stunning instruments, and has made many for revered artists. For those of you that are unaware, there was a fundraiser held a few weeks ago in order to raise money for Brian's current state of health. As far as I know he is still able to work/ build instruments, but that may not be the case for long. Just wanted to use this opportunity to praise the mans work and wish him well!

Glad to see another happy customer from a guitar made close to home.

Brian built this for me AFTER his health issues. I know its not easy with his current condition, its the dust that causes him the most problems. I spoke with him about this at length. He has a very high quality dust collector in his shop & this has helped him tremendously. I haven't spoken to him an a month or two but last we spoke he didn't seem to be concerned about it. Unless things have changed

Re: Brian Monty Blues Queen.

I double checked my sources, the fundraiser was to raise money for ear, eye (?), and throat cancer in general, not specific to Brian himself, he was just the one who organized it. Sorry for the misinformation!

Re: Brian Monty Blues Queen.

Dave's funny looking but the guitar is beautiful!

Looking forward to seeing it in person
