Bridge p/u in Neck position

Re: Bridge p/u in Neck position

the El Degas LP copy my dad bought me for my 15th birthday is looking really nervous as it hangs on the wall here. Kept it for sentimental reasons, but p/u's aren't great, and already decided that next project will be finding the pups/options that will replace the old Jap parts! Suggestions.

What kind of music are you wanting the LP for? The neck PU on a LP can get boomy, so a '59N is a risk (although I like them). For definition and to prevent muddiness, you need a bright, clear neck. On LP's I've used JazzN, DMz Bluesbucker, and a Phat CatN (with an A5/A3). All work well.

On the bridge are you wanting a PAF type, or something raw, raunchy, & high output, like a C5? Ther's also medium output, like a DMz Fred.

A good pair is a 498T (with an A4) and a 490R (with an A5). A lot of guys pull these & sell them, and never try different magnets, so they never know their potential.

Keep an eye out for used PU's, and see what you can get a good price on.

Re: Bridge p/u in Neck position

Ok thanks, that gives me some options..figure anything is going to be MILES better than the stock pups that came in it in 1975 :-) Especially note on the 59's as I was leaning towards it as it seems to be the consistant "middle of road" choice from many threads....Also hadn't realized the impact magnets had..realized it was part of the construction so would have some, but its almost like a black art understanding how the magnets can change the sound of a similar p.u so dramatically....from threads appears you are the one seen as having figured it out, but clearly a black art almost...or a LOT of experimentation....one last question (promise) on the Tele build...saw two types of push/pull in 500, one said audio pot (assume thats the one I want) and the other said "linear" pot? Difference??

I'm not expert on magnets, but I like to experiment with them. I've saved a lot of money by swapping magnets instead buying as many new PU's, and want to pass the advice on to others so they can save money too. I read posts about guys that have bought several, even 5 or 6 PU's, looking for their ideal sound in a guitar, and sometimes not even getting it after all that. That's what motivates me to promote replacement magnets & pots. Players shouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on electronics & still be frustrated.

The typical pots are audio, they increase & decrease normally to your ears, whereas linear aren't as even in their perceived changes.

There's no underestimating how much a high-quality PU can change a guitar's tone. Life's too short for crappy PUs.

Re: Bridge p/u in Neck position

Is it a big deal changing magnets? Obviously I am just figuring the WIRING out :-) Assume p/us have to be disassembled and rebuilt. Will search forum, I have a feeling it will be covered here as well :-) Tks again for all the help...

It takes about 10 minutes to swap a magnet, and half of that is loosening the strings & retuning. Lots of threads on that. You're getting up to speed fast.

Re: Bridge p/u in Neck position

Time will tell :-) Getting excited about getting started on the Tele and also watching for set for the LP Ed Degas if I can find a used pair cheap....
