Bridge pickup for an SG

I decided I am going to turn the sg faded into a sludge/metal monster. With a single bridge pickup the question is which one? Cleans are not a priority at all. Looking for a nice thick tone but that is balanced as well. Do I go el diablo, nazgul, black winter or what? I am new to these types of pickups.

Re: Bridge pickup for an SG

I'd go for a P-Rails. Wired in series it sounds like a Gibson Iommi 'bucker, but with a Triple Shot or pair of push-pulls you get 3 additional sounds for some versatility.

Re: Bridge pickup for an SG

Not the Black Winter. BW is clean and flat. No sludge.

Drop tuning? What tuning? What amp?

Re: Bridge pickup for an SG

I wondered about the prails. Tuning will be drop C at the lowest. The amps will vary but mostly Marshall sounding. I usually stick with more paf style pickups or the occasional distortion. But I figured I would have fun with This one. The styles of music I will use it for are corrosion of conformity, mastodon, down and sabbath.

This.

SD Describes it here as "The El Diablo is a vicious pickup. It's super hot wind, Alnico 2 blade magnets, and dangerous aesthetics separate it from all other high-output humbuckers. Because of the Alnico 2 magnets and extra hot DC resistance, it’s one of the best pickups we make for thick saturation for rhythm playing and warm leads that push through."

Yes! El Diablo and maybe a Jazz (for those clean intros). Sludge-o-matic. You can even go for an Invader if you want it super thick and mucky.

Re: Bridge pickup for an SG

El Diablo, Invader, Custom8, Custom, JBa2 or JBa8 have all worked for me in my epi Sg tuned to c#/drop B. Woody from c.o.c. uses an invader in his sg and they can usually be found cheap. Currently I have a duncan Iommi (pretty sure it's the same as the el diablo) in one SG and an Invader in another and either one will do the trick for those bands.

Or even, a SLUG!

It's fat, gnarly, and insanely high-output - it's the SLUG. Measuring at 48k DCR, it gives off an immense sound that is perfect for stoner and doom metal.

Re: Bridge pickup for an SG

I have wondered about the slug. But was afraid it would push my little 15 watt 1x12 amp too much. There so many pickups out now it's hard to keep up.

It would. If you had a 100 watt Marshall or Laney, it would work really well.

Tried all these in my SG in Bridge position for heavy stuff...

Re: Bridge pickup for an SG

You really need to pop in a Bare Knuckle Warpig.. It is the perfect stoner/doom/sludge pickup. I pretty much exclusively play stoner and doom on my SG with a set of Warpigs. The clarity when paired with doom level gain and fuzz is crazy. You won't be disappointed.
