Hello everyone. I am at a loss, unfortunately. People here seem to do a real thorough job of evaluation and recommendation, so here goes.
I have an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I bought it quite a while ago based on price. This has a mahogany neck, mahogany/alder body and a carved maple top and a new bone nut.
Recently I was sold a Jazz/JB set because I told the tech I wanted "versatility" and like to use moderately high gain occaisionally.
The Jazz has turned the neck position from mud to beautiful. It has less bite in distortion than I'm used to at the neck, but who cares? The clarity is remarkable to me coming from a nearly unuseable stock pickup and a StewMac that was also muddy unless raised all the way up.
The JB, however is not really floating my boat at the moment. All I hear is a whiny, nasaly sound. I can hear the heritage in this pickup with lot's of distortion, but under low to medium gain, my friend's stock $199 epiphone with stock bridge pickup seems to have more bite while the JB just whines along sounding like a sinus infection or something.
I have a Fender (gasp) The Twin-100watt 2 channel Fender. It was suggested that maybe the amp was to blame, but hey, the Jazz sounds amazing through this amp. I tend to think the JB is not playing nice with my guitar or my amp or both.
My question, then is what now?
I want something that gives the balanced output at the bridge, but still has good full body to it.
It should be said that this is the second distortion type pickup that has sounded this way in this guitar. I had Kent Armstrong on the phone listening to the sound and saying it sounded like I wired his pickup out of phase. But I didn't and I didn't even wire this JB.
It should also be said that I kind of liked the stock epi bridge pickup aside from two problems:
1) sounded a little weak
2)anything over 1 on the volume knob and it squealed like a pig-soooeeeeee
The custom 5 looks really appealing to me. I'm looking to get a nice even sound that is at home with light overdrive all the way to distortion.
Will the custom 5 clash with the jazz? And if so, what other recommedations?
I am taking my time and shopping around when I can. the JB is useable, but only with the tone rolled almost all the way off.
I like lots of music. I like Megadeth, but I have always hated Dave Mustaine's tone(as it applies to my own playing-not his). I didn't know I bought his pickups until later.
Tones I like include Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Santana, Trey Anastasio, Adam Jones.
I like the attitude here. Tone is in your head and ears and everyone is different. That seems to be respected around here.
I hope this wasn't too long for my first post.
