Bridge pickup replacement for Jackson Dinky

Hey, so I recently got myself a '98 Japanese Jackson Dinky, which came with Dimarzio PAF Pro in the bridge. It's great on cleans, sadly I didn't buy this guitar for the cleans tho. I'm currently on the hunt for a replacement with a hotter and clearer pickup, but I really have no clue what would be great for there. I'll mostly play Hardcore on this guitar, so basically 90% riffs. My current rig consists of a Marshall 1960A cab with a Peavey 6505 amp, and since I got that amp less than 2 weeks ago, I doubt that I'll be changing my rig any time soon. About half an year ago I had the exact same dilemma about my SG, and finally came to the conclusion of buying a Custom, which kicks ass and I love it. I currently have a '76 Dimarzio Super Distortion laying around, which I should probably test out, but honestly I think that it will be way too bright. I'm currently thinking about Nazgul or Dimebucker, but honestly I have no clue which will sound good in this guitar. I'm really open to any recommendations, could even try other brands like bareknuckles etc.

The Super Distortion isn’t bright at all. Put that bad boy in there....trust me.

Even though it's in the ballpark of a PAF Pro in terms of power, perhaps a tad weaker, I'd check out the Screamin' Demon: my favorite humbucker to blend with singles.

You could call it bright but to me it's more biting. I think it's much better with gain than the PAF Pro. I own both.

The absolute hidden gem in the SD lineup is the PATB-1. This pickup will do EXACTLY what you are describing. It was designed to give added warmth and girth to trem equipped guitars and it absolutely rules. I have one in my only Floyd equipped guitar and it will never leave that guitar. I've had that guitar since 92' and I tried pickup after pickup in it with no luck. Nothing sounded good. Someone here recommended the PATB-1 and I finally took a leap of faith.... and it worked.

The only thing I might do in the future is try out the PATB-3, as it's voiced to be a little more vintage PAF flavored. Seriously, you owe it to yourself to at least strongly consider it.

I'm put the ubiquitous JB in mine and am in no hurry to change it.

It's a H/S/S guitar, can't put H/H emgs in there. I was considering the emg 81/SA/SA set, but won't it sound too thin?

Not if you adjust your amp. ;)

If you want your guitar to play nice with singles you have a couple options, go with a somewhat bright, lean lower-output pickup or go with one that splits to something similar in level to the middle pickup, that is to say if you want something that will quack. The JB is particularly good for this as are some others.

Some guys like the drop in output when switching from a humbucker to single coils. I like something a bit hotter than vintage in the neck with a vintage single in the middle. I've used an SSL-6 with a JB in full humbucking mode, but prefer something just a little leaner otherwise I'll go for a single-sized humbucker.

I said it already, but I really like the Screamin' Demon. A Perpetual Burn or Pegasus will be the next step up in output. As far as the PAF Pro goes, I only like it in the neck. I didn't like it in the bridge and swapped it out for a Breed Neck, leaving the other PAF Pro in the neck.

You really don't need a high output pickup when you have a high gain amp, unless you like more compression and/or fast attack. A hot wind can get you the compression. A strong magnet like ceramic or Alnico 8 will get you fast attack.

So I just played around for an hour with the 6505 and the guitar. The paf pro just sounds too muddy and blends in with the bass. With too much treble and/or presence the guitar sounds "broken" lol. There's no life in it at all. The Custom in my SG does a perfect job and everything sounds pretty good with it. I use the bridge 99% of the time, so I really don't care about the singles. Honestly I just wanna try out something new, since I don't have much experience yet.

So anything besides an SH-5 and PAF Pro would be something new?

There are a lot of choices to choose from in the bridge position.

My first Screamin' Demon went in an HH guitar with a Full Shred in the Neck. My second went into an HSS. It has left a lasting impression on a pickup's ability to convey every little nuance in my style and still rock hard. While I like my SH-1, SH-4, SH-5, SH-7, SH-10, Duncan/Ibanez HB-103 (a better pickup than the SH-4 or SH-6, IMO) and EMG 81/85, nothing I've ever played compares to the TB-16, Pegasus, The Breed Neck and especially not the Screamin' Demon; there is nothing else like it.

There are still quite a few higher output DiMarzio bridge pickups I'd like to try (some for a second time) besides The Breed Neck, but mainly the AT-1 and some of Vai's assortment of pickups. The PAF Pro? Well to me it is a top-tier neck pickup, provided you pair it with the right bridge pickup. Vai did some great stuff with it in the bridge which ultimately made him famous, but its tone is really relegated to the '80s.

I used to play metal, but now it's just hard rock as a lead player in drop-D and drop-Db.

You never said what style of music you like.

Right, well I'll mostly play Hardcore / Hardcore Punk, and I'll most likely keep this one in Standard D / Standard Db (I'm not really into drop tunings, prefer the standard tuning). I'll be trying to learn to shred a bit, since for the years that I've played I became a really good rhythm player and I've always been into rhythm more than soloing, even though I've been playing a lot of RHCP/Hendrix/SRV some time ago and they kind of balance rhythm with soloing, but I haven't played any fast metal stuff, hence why I decided to get more into it and got myself a nice metal guitar. I guess I'm going to start out with Metallica's first album (guess that's a good start to learn how to shred). I'm mostly self taught since I didn't have money for lessons when I started out, and now I simply don't have time with work and uni to take lessons for now. I don't really have a dream tone or anything, I just watch videos / listen to bands life, and pick up whatever I like. Kind of trying to make my own thing (or at least not trying to be somebody else). Just wanna take people's experience since I lack any at all, then just check out the stuff and see what I like the most.

Funny thing is it's pretty much the same guitarists. I know for sure that the lead guitarist uses a Peavey 5150 with an ibanez emg loaded guitar.

If you like EMG, then go EMG. I don't think that they'll sound thin.

Dimarzio's Breed Bridge sounds great in the one I have. I have the Breed neck in it too, but I'm not as crazy about the neck model.

i repeat...emgs... then bkp ragnarok. The ragnarok eliminates a lot of active pickup problems (lack of dynamics, sharp treble), but retains the midrange punch and beefs up the low end. perfect for hardcore punk

Breed Neck in the bridge, not the neck. It even has a name: BNIB.

Metallica's guitar players aren't exactly a shining example of shred. Dave Mustaine more so than the other two guys in Metallica but was/is still very rough around the edges.

The Custom is fairly shrill/bright/screaming pickup. Same kind of highs as a Distortion. If you like the custom the SuperDistortion will be just fine. And if screaming highs are what you are avoiding...stay away from the Dimebucker and the Demon....

Just use the SuperDistortion


And with that amp, honestly, you don't have any need for a hotter/clearer pickup. Mega output pickup plus mega gain amp = mega-mush.

I agree with the lower output pup that plays well with Singles (I'd go with the Demon, honestly....).

Still, if you are 99% bridge guy....and going to go speed-lead on us....JB is hard to argue with.
