Brief JS DS-1 review

Let me start by saying that I hated the Boss DS-1 before I sent it to John. That's the reason I originally did, along with everyone's high regard of his mods to their DS-1. It is a hunk of junk new, and don't go buy a new one if you want yours modded. Get one for a couple bucks at a pawn shop. This mod costs only a small amount of money in comparison to Keeley's, Keeley's DS-1 Ultra mod costs $75. Keeley is a big company so it probably takes awhile to get yours back. I sent mine to John on Saturday, he got it and modded it on Wednesday, sent it out on Thursday, and I had it on my pedalboard on SATURDAY. Absolutely amazingly fast work (and it is also very high quality) by Mr. Spina. This is an excellent investment for those of you that want a gritty, ballsy distortion pedal. You won't be getting any Metallica tones from this pedal (Kirk's tone sucks anyway, so why would you want it?), but it has a pretty large gain range. If you have a DS-1 in the closet that's too cheap to sell and too ****ty to use, do yourself a favor and send STRATDELUXER97 a PM about his DS-1 mods. It's well worth the money, and much better than having it in your closet. Plus, you get a very unique tone! I have never heard any pedal give a tone like this. I can't wait to record with it.

My favorite use for the Spina DS-1 is soloing. It makes my strat sound like an old SG being played through a JCM800... very raunchy, gritty tone. It actually works well for the live Iron Maiden tone from the 80's (though they used Distortion + stompboxes, I'll be sending mine to John shortly!). I like this pedal for AC/DC or Who type SG sounds. This pedal would work great for a band with two guitars. It sounds very interesting with one overdriven guitar accompanying I've realized. I like to use it if I want a unique powerchord tone or when I'm soloing and don't want my hot rails to sound like the fluff they are. Overdrive just can't produce the grit that this pedal can, not even my multi thousand dollar Marshall rig. This pedal doesn't sound like Slash's creamy Les Paul, but it sounds like Townshend's SG at Live at Leeds on steroids or something. I've heard it put that way before. In summary, I am very pleased with the pedal, and the price. John is one of the nicest guys you'll ever talk to, and he's not going to cheat you! He gets it right back to you, and he gives you a unique tone I've never heard before. I like unique looking and sounding things, that's why I use so many different brands and use different color LEDs in my pedals. I even included a green LED in the battery compartment of the pedal and he installed it for me. So DS-1/bad distorted tone owners: either send your crappy DS-1 to John, or scout out eBay or your local pawn shops to get a DS-1 and send it down to John in Florida. You must likely won't be disappointed. I am one of the pickest people EVER about my tone, it drives everyone mad, and this pedal is one of only 8 that resides on my pedalboard (and probably will for a long time). Hope this is helpful. I also hear John's wah mods (particularly to Vox pedals) are amazing too. So talk to STRATDELUXER97 if you have a DS-1, wah, or other pedal that just isn't doing it for you!

Thanks for the review! After hearing so much about his DS-1 mod I decided I needed to try it, and I'll be sending one off to him sometime this week :).

Go for it, absolutely. ANYONE who has an unmodded DS-1 laying around NEEDS to ship it off to John! Seriously, stock it's a crappy pedal, and it's not a huge investment. I bet you could find that kind of money crumpled up laying around your house somewhere, maybe in the same dusty closet where your unmodded DS-1's should be :).

Wow! What a review buddy! How much do I owe you for the advertising! LOL.... ;O)
So glad you like your DS1....It's pretty hard to fathom a $40 pedal that becomes most people's top 3 pedals on their board...it's one of my favorites also...Thanks again for taking the time to let myself and others know about your DS1....Awesome!

I'll advertise for just about anything that I love and appreciate for free. Your pedal is one of the few things out there that gets my approval, I'm quite picky. Especially with pedals that go in the direct guitar chain. A bad distortion pedal can blow eardrums out. When I get back to the studio and record with this thing along with my new Amp and my basically all new pedalboard, I'll be quick to tell people what pedal I'm using for that gritty solo tone. I'll leave some copies in the local CD store and around school, and I always list my gear and cite all of my helpers, and you and your DS-1 will be one of them! When I get to doing this, don't be surprised to get a barrage of DS-1's coming from Atlanta, GA headed your way....

Re: Brief JS DS-1 review

Ditto on all the positive vibes everyone's expressing here! I've been using John's modded pedals for almost a few years now, and by all means they are probably the best quality made and sounding pieces of effect equip. that I use.
The dude's been tinkering with pedals for years, narrowing the process down by elimination and finding the best tone ranges using caps., resistors, etc. to dial in the sounds of pedals like the DS-1, TS-9 and 5, SD-1, and OD-2 (one of my favs), PLUS his gift with Vox 847 wahs. He just did one for me a few weeks back and all I can say is that it's the best vintage sounding wah I've ever owned. It's quiet, very vocal, what can I say?....the pedal is a work of art. The sweetest sweeps I've ever heard.
Good stuff, maynard

To Bobby and Boleslaw Gers 666

Thanks guys...These types of posts just make my whole night and the fact that you'd even take the time to type so much is just too nice guys!

Hey Bobby....I'm just glad that 3 years later that all of your pedals even still work! LOL...

I guess I'll have to have my wife read these longer reviews,so she can stop complaining about me being on the forums so much! :smack: :laugh2:

Re: Brief JS DS-1 review

I used to have a Keeley Ultra DS-1 and for some reason it just didn't grab me, so I wound up selling it. After digging up a bunch of reviews of John's DS-1 mod, I decided to snag another DS-1 and try it :). I want a good distortion pedal to keep on my board, along with a nice low- to mid-gain OD, my wah, and eventually a Visual Sound H20 for chorus and delay.

I also had a Keeley DS-1 and thought it was pretty bad...I sent John my DS-1 simply to see what all the fuss was about...it has a place on my pedal board, and it will stay there!

John,

I have had tons of overdrive, distortion and fuzz boxes over the years, and I will just say this...I have paid a lot more money for distortion pedals and gotten a lot less tone! Even if somebody bought a new DS-1 ($40) and then had you mod it they would still be in for less that $100, and I have had dirt boxes that cost 3 and 4 times that much and they didn't sound as good as my Spina DS-1! I also want you to know, I am not saying that because you are are a forum bro, or because we are buddies...if something sucks I will say so!

I've been playing with some "extreme" settings on my friend's Spina DS-1 that he foolishly traded back to me (I told him that he was getting the raw end of the deal! :laugh2: ), and I've got to say that this pedal has the capability to get some of the best "stoner rock"/Big Muff tones I've ever heard. I've bought and sold a handful of fuzzes that claimed to sound "like the amp is gonna blow up," but this is the only pedal that really delivered. I used it with my bass setup and it was insane.

If you're into QOTSA/Kyuss or the Butch Vig sound, then you should give this pedal a whirl.

Re: Brief JS DS-1 review

Again, I agree with what the gang here is saying.....and John, yes, you SHOULD have momma read a few of these posts 'cause I think you're accumulating quite a following of nice folks out here who are enjoying the fruits of your labor, pal!
If any of you reading this don't have a Spina-modded DS-1 in your chain of effects and are in need of some great Marshall-overdriven sound out of your rig, then you'd best get some asap. Just buy a cheap one on ebay or catch 'em at M-F or Zzounds on sale and send it to John for some magic. Save yourself some shipping and have the pedal sent directly to John from whomever you buy it from. That's what I've done more than a few times....right John?......lol
Rock on, brudda!!

Ya know, not to knock john or anything, but keeley's got a damn good turn around time too. When i've sent him my pedals i've typically gotten em back within a week.

Keeley electronics really isnt as big of a company as you'd think. Customer service isnt even remotely beginning to show signs of being a problem. I'm just sayin...no need dissin on a good company ;)

I've got a DS-1 ultra and love it, though I would like to try out john's eventually to see what the fuss is about. Unfortunately, I got about 6 guitars that are in various stages of repair and need parts, so i'll have to hold out on that for a little while.

You owe me no explanation brother....Robert Keeley is a great guy...Very nice and down to earth...The guy is making a real nice living at what he does....I just do this for fun on the side, and if anyone wants keeley to mod their pedals....I'm perfectly ok with that....It's a hobby and I've done way more pedals than I ever expected to...
