Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

How about p90s, their single coils that sound thick like humbuckers and sound clear like tele pickups. So phat chats would be my suggestion.

You might look into the Dimarzio Bluesbucker and Eric Johnson Custom models too, might be just what you want.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've checked out the Bluesbucker, and, apparently, installing them both "backwards" can give a tele-like sound (and alternate installation, one "backwards" and the neck one "forwards" sounds like two P90s). I think these are now high on the choice list. Thanks again!

Here's a clip of the JB in split mode through a multieffects unit I own. I think you were wanting a clip or something. Anyways, for what it's worth, this is in my Ibanez (maple body, wtf?!) guitar.

The Jazz/JB combo actually sounds very good split. I sell alot of those sets to players looking for all around versatility. The nice thing, like TR said, is that they already come standard w/ 4 conductor wire, and if you buy them prepackaged as the "Hot Rodded Humbucker Set", you save some money.

I love me some Police :) Sounds great!

I've been having a look at costs etc, and now I'm second-guessing if maybe it wouldn't be more sensible to revert to my earlier plan (trade in the LP for a Tele, and upgrade those pups)...

Well it's all good. By the way, how do you think that guitar sounds? I hated it, to be honest, except with the JB split. Overall, that guitar was too bright for the JB, and too muddy in the bass (due to maple) with the CC. I just got sick of dealing with a soft maple bodied Ibanez, so I'll be getting rid of it soon.

I think it's the perfect sound, if you're playing like Andy Summers... I love the sound, but I don't know how versatile it is. I think that if, like you said, it sounds muddy or bright (and extremely so) at different settings, it's not so much versatile as schizo :(

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

Get a TV Jones TV'Tron classic. (In the humbucker mounting)

You might want to go neck and bridge because they're very low output. And it won't sound exactly like a tele but it will be VERY bright and twangy.

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

...how has no one advised putting the humbucker in parallel.

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

What about the following combination:

SH-2 Jazz in the neck
SH-3 Stag Mag in the bridge

Both tapped.

Would that combination work, at all?

Or, another consideration, two Phat Cats?

Haven't had the money or time to really get busy with this pup-replacement idea, and now I'm not even sure on what conclusions I'd come to before.

I have no experience with the Stag Mag, but the Jazz/StagMag combo sounds convincing. However, the JB sounds nice split, so you could get the Hot Rodded combo and save $20....

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

I would get a '59 with split coil wiring.
The '59 splited sounds telish and it definitly has some twang to it.
And if you split both and wire them in paralel it gets as telish as with will ever be.
The trick is gettin buckers with a vintage output, that way when you split them you get a weak single coil soundw with some twang.

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

I hears that lipstick 'buckers have a bit of s/c twang to them - any truth in this ?

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

Wouldn't the conversion rings be real easy to make? You just take a piece of pickguard material, cut it to the size of a humbucker ring, rout it and drill a couple holes, right? But I mean, I'm using a JB for my conversion, I was just sayin'...

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

I'd say the Custom 5 - it sounds more like a tele to my ears than the 59 does. Split it could even more.

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

Lace Hemi bridge without splitting, just with 500k pots. Period!

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

Either a DiMarzio Fred or a Virtual PAF....

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

Something else that you might want to consider is your strings - If you use really heavy low strings with a bright material (steel vs. nickel wound), that will bring alot of twang to the table. Also, your lp has a shorter scale, which doesn't help. A 25.5" scale is twangier than a 24.75" scale. Just my 2 cents though

Re: Bright-twangy (Tele) sound in a Les Paul: Pickup suggestions?

Making a Les Paul sound like a Telecaster is a big jump. It's almost unreasonable enough that the best advice is to sell the LP and get a Tele. The main reason I would try to make a Les Paul sound like a Telecaster would be to have a unique instrument. I am sure there are some pickups out there which would get you close, but overall, I think you would still have to add an equalizer no matter which pickups you chose. So my suggestion is to get your hands on a good 10-band graphic EQ and stick with the pickups you have. It will allow you to keep your guitar the way it is and cover all the musical styles you like.
