Brobucker

What's the skinny on this pickup, I often hear people say that this is the best pickup SD offers, but I also don't hear too much about it anymore. It's like a '59 on steroids on steroids right? What's it good for and how's it sound?

Re: Brobucker

I can't say it's the best pickup SD offers, but it's definitely one of the premier PAF-ish winds they offer. To me, it's a more "vintage flavored" Custom/'59 to me. The upper mids aren't as aggressive and in your face (I can really hear the custom coil in the bridge). The brobucker is fuller and richer due to the aged a5. Top end is pretty open and bass sounds firm, but not as tight with a normal a5. This pickup fits well in bright guitars. I have mine in a Gibson 356 with aluminum abr 1/stoptail and *ebony board. It's still pretty articulate under mid-high gain.

Re: Brobucker

I too find it on the warmer side of the spectrum. I put mine in an already warm Dean Hardtail and in that guitar it was too warm. However, I have designs to try it in another guitar or two soon. It did have great tight low end and plenty of mids, but the high end wasn't nearly enough. It will likely be better in a brighter guitar. If I couldn't find the perfect brighter guitar, I'd probably change the magnet to a fully charged RCA5, or maybe even a polished A5 to help brighten it up.

I can't recall if the BB is wound with 42AWG, but I think it is. 10k is about as much 42AWG wire you can get onto the bobbins. More wire makes for warmer midrange and a lower resonant peak, which imparts less high end. I think the BB would be good in a LP Custom with a maple cap, PRS style guitars that are brighter and maybe in certain super Strat's. YMMV of course and everyone hears things differently.

Re: Brobucker

I'm currently using one with AlNiCo 3 and I looove it. I wish there was a matched neck pickup. I could record some samples if you want

59/C works well in the neck with it. Either that or a Whole Lotta Humbucker should work reasonably well.

The other guys are spot on with the descriptions. I will say this though, it sounds better with two 1M pots.

Re: Brobucker

Is the Bro Bucker name some reference to the sound of Duane Allman's LP's PAF's with the Allman Bros.?. That's what comes to mind when I see the name.

Re: Brobucker

^^ Brobucker is name because the forum "bros" set the specs for MJ and the custom shop to make the pickup. I suppose a 1M pot would help in a warm guitar, but I've haven't used one ever. You can get high spec pots from eBay sellers ranging 550K-575K

I use my brobucker with a sentient neck. I play heavier music with this guitar, but it can easily double down to something more subtle.

Thanks, I always wondered where the name came from.

Re: Brobucker

#42 pe wire, slight coil mismatch with the stud being 5.2k or so and screw being 4.8k. degaussed a5 is what the initial run came with, i use a polished a2 in mine, mostly cause im an a2 bucker junkie. the aged a5 is terrific though, big bottom, soft top end thats still clear and enough mids to balance well. i wouldnt put it in a dark guitar and i like it best with 500k volume and tone.

Re: Brobucker

Jeremy, did the A2 make it any darker? Any other significant changes, since I know you're a man of few words? I'm an A2 junky too and maybe I'd like it better with an A2, or a 3 or 4? I have all of those.

Thanks.

Re: Brobucker

i dont know if it made it any darker but it changed the voicing of the high end for sure. polished a2 by the way. a5 has a sharp high end that i dont usually care for, a2 has a sweeter high end that i really like and that difference carries over to this swap as expected. there is less bass so maybe that makes it sound less dark? still sounds thick and meaty. i love mine but i also really liked the aged a5 when i had it in the bridge of a lp special.

i tend to use brighter vintage style amps which obviously influences what works well for me

Re: Brobucker

Thanks Jeremy. I'm going to try polished A2 and a polished UOA5 that I have. The UOA5 might be too subtle a change.

i have aged a5 and uoa5 but ive never tried them both in the same pup to find the subtle differences since they are fairly similar. might be fun to swap it in and see what ya think

Re: Brobucker

So many pickups and combinations to try and such rudimentary soldering skills. Ahhh…….

Re: Brobucker

I have a BroBucker and tried it in the bridge position of my Cort and I did not like it. Output was to low and the the highs a bit weak so I took it out put my heavily modded 500T back in. I measured the pole screws at 50mm and that is for the neck position , not the bridge. I put it aside for a few monthe and decided to use it in the neck position of my Epiphone SG Korina. First though I changed the center magnet to a RC A8 and added two half magnets to the outer sides , like Gibson did with the 500T. I put a 1/2 RC UOA5 on the pole scrw side and a polished 1/2 A5 on the stud side. The outer magnets are magneticly opposing the center RC A8. By doing this the output is increased substantially. I installed the BroBucker into the neck position of the Epiphone SG Korina with the pole screws facing the neck and the two coils wired in parallel and man this pickup sounds great and has found a permanent home in that guitar. It brings out the Korina bodys resonance beautifully and also brings out a bit of bridge harmonics and has a good high end. I hope this info helps somebody , good luck to all.

Just because a pickup is 50mm does not necessarily mean it is a neck position pickup.
Gibson and many hard tail bridges are 50mm.
Fender/Floyd rose use 53mm spacing. Hence the term “F spaced”.
