Broken Vibrato Arm

Just by curiosity : Do you often break you trem arm ?

Mine broke last night (on the Strat). I did not do any antics. It just broke this that : what is called "fatigue". The piece of metal was 30 years old.
I am sure this happens but It never saw this before.

(Cannot upload the pic).

Re: Broken Vibrato Arm

It happens.

It has only happened to me once, on my first guitar, an '85 MIJ '50s Strat.

Re: Broken Vibrato Arm

My teacher broke the arm in the block of my '82 Strat when I was 15. That was the only time it happened, though.

Re: Broken Vibrato Arm

Never broke one

But my buddy seems to do this frequently

Take the saddles off
So you can get to the screws for the block

Take the block off and see if you can take a sharp pointy something
And spin the peice out
Get pointy thing directly on top
Make tiny circles counter clockwise
It should back out

Then put it all back together

Or take this opportunity to put a brass block on

Yeah I was thinking trying this (after a pickup swap on two other axes). But I hate removing the sadle one day after changing the strings.

Good idea... Looking for a new job now... After I will order some parts... I want a Trem Block with DEEP holes so the string does not move to much inside when I bend it).

Re: Broken Vibrato Arm

Also, very cheap bridges have a better chance of breaking. I had a student that broke 2 of them on his 2 Squier Bullet Strats. I don't even think the blocks are solid in those.

Re: Broken Vibrato Arm

My Charvel's floyd arm has been going strong for the past 10 years or so. I'm not the craziest trem user, but it gets regularly pushed around.

Re: Broken Vibrato Arm

I was just thinking earlier how i NEVER use a trem. Lol, after reading your experience, not looking to start! :)

Re: Broken Vibrato Arm

I never use the screw-in Fender trem because it's a bad design.

Re: Broken Vibrato Arm

Even Leo realized it was a bad design, seeing how the G&L arm is used
