id like to know about these pickups, i know chuck schuldiner used the x2n exclusively and it's an extremely high gain pickup but not muchnother than that.

air norton i know very little about aside from it apparently sounds cool.

i'd like to know more specifically about the 7 string younger brothers of the 6 string versions but i wont complain if people know about just the 6 ;)

and help appreciated

I don't have experience with the X2N-7 but the Air Norton-7 is probably my favorite neck-pickup.
It has a really open sound that's smooth, very fat but surprisingly clear at the same time. very singing voice without mud.
Great lead pup under high gain(check out john petrucci's lead sound to give you a pretty perfect idea what the AN sounds like) and also rather warm and jazzy when used clean.
It also splits very well giving you a rather hot, warm and bluesy SC sound.

do you think it would be great as a thrash solo pickup?

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

Here is a song recorded by some freinds of mine. Around the middle of the track there's a lead passage that's recorded with an AN 6 and it's definitely thrash so that should give you a good idea.

that is a really really great solo tone i like it a lot

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

BTW. the guitar used was a LTD SC-600 all maple neck-thru with the AN in the middle. So in most other guitars the AN will sound a bit fatter because of the different position and bright woods.
No idea about amps though since the whole recording except for the drums was done with a line 6 toneport UX-2

sounds pretty good, a lot brighter than the guitar im thinking of throwing them in.

picking out the right pickups for the right guitar without having a debate about which ones are right in your head is kinda a tedious process :p

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

I have an X2N in a Gibson SG. think of it as a fatter sounding Super Distortion. tight. very powerful tone but with still a lot of top end spike you'll need to roll off some with an EQ. single coil tap very nice also. If you have a good tube amp, it can handle the output. very nice with distortion.

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

I loved the X2N. So hot it is just stupid. But..as Mr. HM said...Very tite, great bottom, punchy and fairly bright/balanced for a mega pup or as DiMarzios go. That said, it is of course compressed like nobodies business. And it will pimp slap your input tubes into next week in an unhealthy way.

I had it wired Series/Parellel/single with a mini toggle, just like the DiMarzio blurb reads. Parellel was AWESOME all around. Sensible output, really clear, well balanced, nice highs...dare I say bell like? bass was really nice...

Single coil was a very killer fat strat sound.

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

pickup: X2N7
guitar: RG 7321

1st impression--the low end is huge. lots of bass and low mids without getting muddy. Not as much scream as I expected, but harmonics are effortless. Very rich and thick sounding, similar to a duncan custom custom, except with a much tighter low end.

After some tweaking--Very responsive. This is not the one trick pony that I was expecting. While this pickup excels at anything high gain, it also works very well for blues, jazz, and of course, shred. Clean sound is usable in series, and very nice when split. Much better than the stock POS unit this guitar came with.

Here's my review from Sevenstring.org of the X2N7.

Bigheadood's tone is cool i think.It's a great PU..But the X2N 7 isn't the same PU as the X2N 6 string..the 7 string version sounds clearer and better!

dude that sounds so bloody awesome what kind of amp are you using, also thanks everyone who has chimed in thus far and is helping me in my quest to pick out 7 string pu's without great knowledge of 7 string pus :P

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

Thanks, guys.
That was a PODxt straight into the computer USB, into Garageband.
The amp model was the L6 criminal, which is supposed to be a copy of a peavey 5150.

For heavy stuff, this pickup is incredible. What kind of guitar are you gonna put it in?

well im not entirely sure if im hgoing to use the x2n yet im thinking of using a 7 string jb/jazz but i dont need to make a decision yet i just wanna get an idea of what will sound good since as i said my knowledge of 7 strings isn't that great, and most of my expierence comes from playing iwth my band's other guitarist's 7 string or playing any one i can find in music stores.

the guitar is a custom king v style gguitar im having built swamp ash body, cocobolo fretboard, wenge set neck, i was looking at the emg 707 but i really don't want two 81 pickups so im gonna stick with duncan or dimarzio and figure it out from there.

i basically like just want the perfect thrash pickup but in 7 string form, neck pickup really fat, clear and jazzy even under heavy distortion and the brdge pickup with a nice helping of low end to give it a nice chug and i was thinking the x2n could maybe be my pickup even if the output isnt really as much of a concern since i use a line 6 amp for everything

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

also anyone think x2n/AN would be a pretty sweet combo

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

No 7-string experience yet; however, on the 6-string side of things, I find myself saying this a lot in forum postings lately for whatever reason - DM's AN is one of the best neck pickups I have ever played, bar none...mind you, so is their HB From Hell, even though tonally they're very different. To my ears, the HFH is more like the SD Jazz Neck sound clips I hear - more ringing and bell-like, great clarity and emphasis on the high end, whereas the AN is VERY smooth and full, and extremely creamy-sounding - I've never heard neck position solos sound better than on this pickup, mind you I'm sure SD has something comparable to it, I'm just not well-versed enough in SD pickups at this point. I have also used a PATB-1n and thought it was good, but just good and not great compared to the other aforementioned pu's.

My two cents...

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

I'm really tempted now to try out this combo to see if it's what im looking for

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

Swamp-Ash for the 7..I think it's one of the best choices...
That said ,you need a well balanced PU...If you love to play Thrash ,The X2N will bring you there allright!
AirNorton is a great sounding PU ,fat and liquid sounding...

Re: bros, anyone have experience with the x2n/air norton(6 or 7 string)

I was gonna go maho (since it's my favourite body wood) but i realized the amount of bass in the guitar would just make the B string muddy

The main debate in my head is between the JB7/Jazz7 and the X2N7/AN7 still
