I recently had to spend a week in Chicago. The Hotel I stayed at was wihin walking distance of Buddy Guys Club. I went there for Lunch one afternoon and was able to get a list of who was playing there. I was very excited to hear that Hubert Sumlin was scheduled to play there Sat. Aug. 7th. For those of you who may not know who he is, he was Howlin Wolf's guitar player for 25 years, truly a great blues legend. I was very busy during the week and did not trust myself to go during the week. It's hard not to drink and smoke while listening to some great blues. So I figured Sat. nite would be the night. Unfortunatley Hubert sufferred a heart attack earlier in the week and was not going to be able to play. I am still uncertain of his health at this time. God bless him and a speedy recovery. So I figured I would go anyway, the club usually has a great band on Sat. Nites. I was unable to get there early due to the fact that I had to work until midnite. So a bunch of us went over about 12:30 only to find that Pinetop Perkins was playing in Huberts place. What a great show. He has to be pushin 80, but don't let that fool you this guy can play, and play he did. He had a great backup band that really smoked the room. It was a great night. I got to speak with both Pinetop Perkins and Buddy Guy about there carriers. I found both of these legendary performers very gracious and willing to talk about music at length. How cool is that? Speaking to Buddy Guy, and Pinetop Perkins.. Shaking there hands, and listening to Pinetop play his butt off. It was a great way to end a wonderful and sucessful trip. The bottom line here is Buddy Guys Legends is a true Blues club, and well worth a trip. If you get in to Chicago this place is a MUST!!!!!!!!
