Build your own AMP

Does anyone here have really good advice (e.g., no :bsflag: ) on building your own amplifier?

I am looking for suppliers / craftsmen who have experience designing and building tube amps using 6V6 power tubes with a 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier.

Class A with 120/220 Volt input.

Controls would be PRE-AMP Gain (volume), (FOR TONE) Treble, Middle, Bass, (FOR REVERB) Dwell, Mix, and Swell, and then POST-PREAMP/DRIVER TUBE STAGE Volume

And again please no BS!

Well, the quick and easy, while still high quality route, would be to just buy a kit from Mission Amps. Thats Bruce Collins, brother of our very own forum bro, Lew.

Or, you could do some good reading over at the 18Watt community. Its a clone, with variations, of the old Marshall 18 watt amp.

Its all good. ;)

Re: Build your own AMP

I've built one of Bruce's 5E3. Doesn't fit your specs. But, I'm currently beta-testing Bruce's 5F4 Tweed Super kit. I had a 2x10 used laquered tweed Victoria 2x10 combo cab, so it seemed like a nice fit.

His kit can be done in a 1x15 combo, a 2x10 combo or a 3x10 combo. With a custom cab builder, you could probably get whatever speaker combo you wanted.

He told me a way I could run 6V6 tubes in it. He's modded the 5F4 layout a bit to put in a bias adjustment pot for Class AB, but modding it back to Class A is a breeze.

There are only two tone controls on it. No master volume though. I'm sure that Bruce could help you with that. There is an extra hole on the chassis for the non-functional ground switch. Bruce is the man on this stuff.

Weber VST is now offering kits and on many of them, Ted is working with Bruce on some of the layouts and circuit mods.

That's my best NO BS advice. www.missionamps.com

Oh yeah, as far as reverb goes, good luck.

Another source that does have a great 3 knob reverb would be Gerald Weber. Problem is that he only has a couple of kits available at this point. But he answers emails promptly and is a helluva nice guy to boot. You'd like him.
Kendrick Amps is his company, Austin area. He'd be an excellent resource. He'd sell you the parts you'd need, probably help you with a layout of some sort, but the chassis would have to be something special I'm guessing.

Weber VST has a lot of chassis available though. Might find something to fit, like an AB763.
