Building one for me, finally.

I'm finally going to build a 4x10 5F6A Tweed Bassman for me. Adding a bias modulated tremolo control box to the inside of the cab. Mixing two ceramic and two alnico weber speakers. Mercury trans.

With my faithful old dog guarding the shop entrance and playoff football.

I too was just soldering with football on. Solid way to kill some time

Re: Building one for me, finally.

What's your outlay on a project like this? I've had a long standing want to build something like this.

Outlay is fairly high. Mercury trans and weber speakers (4) add it up quickly. Factor in quality lacquered tweed pine cab and chromed chassis. Well over a grand to start. Tubes, add another Benjamin.

Then there's the small parts. Pots, jacks and switches are not cheap if you use the good ones.

I'll be glad to test it for you when it's done. Shouldn't take more than a year or two.

Re: Building one for me, finally.

I like your pile of wire.

Scott,

When building an amp, more specifically when building something like this bassman, do you select wires according to the original color scheme or do you have another method?

Is there a generally accepted color scheme for chassis wiring like there is for AC?

I've always wished for a 212 Bassman with Reverb. Basically, a Bassbreaker Reverb. I sure wish Fender had never discontinued the mid 90's Bassbreaker. It was just a 212 Bassman.

Re: Building one for me, finally.

Scott, I'm gonna say this once. You can thank me later...but only if you listen.

Get a Peavey Valverb and use that for the Tremolo and Reverb. Either:
a) Build it into the cab period (don't know how "authentic you are with the cab/layout)
b) Build an addition/rackmount/space or whatever for it and a bypass for whatever you build in so you can add it.

THIS is the amp you MUST do this for!

Classic amp! Do you have a place to crank it-or is the dog already deaf?

Serious question: I've heard that different colors of wire have a different tone. How much merit is there to these claims?

There is a reason you never find bias modulated tremolo in "big" amps.

What is that reason?

Re: Building one for me, finally.

What is that reason?

Bias mod tremolo has a great sound and is easy to build but amp designers in the 50's and 60's had to develop other methods of tremolo once amps got over 15-20 watts.

Bias modulation tremolo gets it's effect from modulating, or changing back and fourth the bias...now, in a small amp like a vibro champ, Princeton or even a pre blackface Deluxe which was about 18 or so watts it can work alright.

However in a bigger amp it just doesn't...first off the amp itself really doesn't like to run correctly with those types of tremolo installed due to the constant fluctuation in bias and second the more you turn the amp up the more the tremolo starts to A, have less effect and B, cause more issues with the amp in general.

I'm not saying it can't be done because it can be done but I have yet to find anybody that did it that really enjoyed the tremolo enough to want to deal with all the negatives that are a byproduct not to mention as I said, amps over about 20 watts just don't respond well to that type of tremolo.

Re: Building one for me, finally.

Since I'm not making it for you, no problem with the tremolo.

The tremolo will have an extra 12AX7.

I'm not downing the bias mod trem as a personal taste issue for me, I'm downing it as a design flaw.

If you never really turn the amp up past 2 or so it'll more than likely never be an issue but if you really plan to use the amp as any kind of volume you'll start seeing why Leo went to the 2 tube then 2.5 tube harmonic circuit that quickly gave way to the optocoupler tremolo of the Blackface/silverface era.

I'm just saying...

VALVERB FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND TONE!!!!!!!
