Bum Antiquity-Does Seymour still wind them?

I have an older set of Antiquity Texas Strat pickups and the neck went out on me. This was a set from many years ago-one of the first runs. Did Seymour wind those early runs himself?

Second question is whether or not it can be rewound to get more of the Surfer neck tone out of it.

Cheers-
Dave

Re: Bum Antiquity-Does Seymour still wind them?

I bought mine in 1994 and was told Seymour wound them.

I would just buy a Surfer neck, if that's what you want. The cost of rewind is the cost of making a custom pickup.

Re: Bum Antiquity-Does Seymour still wind them?

If I buy the Surfer, is there any market value for a defunct Antiquity?

Re: Bum Antiquity-Does Seymour still wind them?

I guess it depends on why it's defunct. If the coil became disconnected from the baseplate, I think that's an easy fix. If the coil was damaged somewhere inside or in the middle, I think it might be useless. Does the coil read anything on a meter?

Re: Bum Antiquity-Does Seymour still wind them?

I haven't metered it yet myself. The LGS Luthier mentioned that it was likely a broken wire within the coil, and a rewind or replacement is the solution. All leads and solder joints were intact.

Thanks for your help, btw!

Plenty of photos of Seymour in the shop recently. If he's winding, I'd like to get something wound by him. Hard to determine the situation.

That Antiquity is worth diagnosing and fixing, for sure. You can get a quote for rewinding (or fixing) by contacting the factory at the bottom of our home page.

In the event that Seymour originally wound it, what would be the chance that Seymour would fix/rewind it?

Re: Bum Antiquity-Does Seymour still wind them?

The wind is not what differs the Texas HOts from the Surfers...it's the magnet (II vs V) so if you want the Surfer sound you're talking rewind/repair plus magnet swaps which is a Fender style single coil is just silly...

Just get a Surfer and call it a day.

As for Seymour winding, I highly doubt you'd get a SWD wound pickup new these days but I also highly doubt it matters....

Re: Bum Antiquity-Does Seymour still wind them?

Contacting the Custom Shop is the best bet.

Certainly.

Seems to appear that with the confirmation of Seymour doing things in the custom shop, that if someone had an Antiquity made by him that he might be able to be the one to restore an Antiquity that he originally made if it kept the value (perceived, sentimental, etc) to the OP.

And, of course, people may very well prefer a pickup confirmed to be wound by the man that started his company by winding (and rewinding) pickups. Why let that money go to eBay and reverb sellers for 35+ year old Seymour-wound pickups when Seymour is in the custom shop and can make a new one? Just a thought.

Re: Bum Antiquity-Does Seymour still wind them?

They should auction a Seymour-wound humbucker set, single set and maybe something else each month. You win, you choose what he winds, but you get the signed real deal. I'd pay my hard-earned money for that, just on the basis of the past Seymour winds I have.

Oh sure, I get it. But right now, I have no way to confirm that he is the one working on a specific pickup that someone wants to buy, or that he is even available to do that sort of thing. Sure, it is a great idea, though.
