Busted a nut!

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
I was tuning and the thing just split! Right between the E and A strings. On the Chops Builder Dean Vendetta. I paid 60 bucks for that!

This might be a replace a nut myself pop. ANy suggestions for a quick easy replace without all kinds of crappy little files? Can this be done?

Re: Busted a nut!

Measure the width, thickness and string slot spacing. Graphtech or TUSQ is sure to have a pre-cut replacement of approximately the correct size. This still might require minor filing to get it absolutely right for the headstock pitch angle.

Re: Busted a nut!

Graphtech for the win. Such a great company.

Make sure you measure all the dimensions (including string spacing) of your existing nut, and find a replacement on their website. You could order directly from them.

Re: Busted a nut!

Definitely Graphtec. "Bone-oid" nuts may look like ivory you'd find on a 1950's guitar, but it's inconsequential IMO. You want a nut that will do the job right, not just look like it came off a 1950s guitar.

I haven't bought a new nut in years (yay Floyd Rose!), so the last time I saw pre-cut nuts they came in 2 styles; thick body and slots slanted to each side for 3x3 LP-style heads, and thin body with straight slots for 6-inline Strat-style heads. Have they started making thinner (Strat-style) 3x3 slotted for non-Gibson nut slots? What about for 3x3 heads with straight string pull instead of Gibson's 3L/3R angles?

Re: Busted a nut!

Pre-cut nuts tend to be offered only in the most popular styles and sizes. That means Gibson, Fender 7.25" and 9.5" radii, some of the more popular acoustic guitar sizes. Anything else, you buy a blank and cut it yourself.

Hmmm, sounds weak, given that Jackson has been around for almost 30 years and has used pretty much the same style of nut for that long (Strat-thin and angled cuts for 6 inline, as well as Strat-thin with straight-pull 3x3 - oh well, if there's a niche in a market, someone's got to fill it).

Re: Busted a nut!

Ran into this last week with my Martin....

We were going to do a Tusq nut - after some searching, nothing availiable for my particular Martin model. Seemed pretty ordinary to me but it just was not available and opted for a bone nut. Just food for thought with the Deans - its going to depend on the exact shape around the headstock.

My Clapton was no issue - Picking it up in the morning... Yay!

Re: Busted a nut!

I have used a piece of oak, and used a band saw/sander to shape and slot it and it turned out great.

I could see why wood nut aren't as common as any other type used because they would tend to wear out faster, but get a real hard wood like maple or oak and it'll take a lot of string moving back and forth to wear them down.

Re: Busted a nut!

Take it to Ben and let him put a real bone nut on it.

I actually have an item he might trade for the work

This is a Vendetta w/ a Blackout. No need for bone.

Now, on my Caddy with Pearly's, I love the Bone nut!!!!

Re: Busted a nut!

If glue sounded THAT good, we would not bother with bone or synthetic equivalents.

Re: Busted a nut!

Ya - just don't get it on your finger.. Never know where you will stick it. It just might stay there. LOL

Re: Busted a nut!

just like gluing the handle back on a coffee cup...only a smaller surface area.

Sound advice!!

Re: Busted a nut!

Shouldn't try to create a nut without a gauged file set and files for shaping blank, but it's expensive to buy all that, have you considered putting the project in a good luthier shop? I'm also fond of Graphtec nuts, almost everyone is because they enhance tuning stability and tone is good.
