IS that a good idea? I'm thinking of getting a Fender Super Reverb and cranking it for just overdrive. Is that a good idea?
+1. When I was first starting out, I'd put my dad's Super in the bathroom, close the door, and rock out with it dimedIt will sound great.......also very loud.

It will sound great.......also very loud. I would try out a Deluxe Reverb, less volume and a similar tone.
Sounds like somebody has had some bad experiences. I've had my Super Reverb for over 12 years and the only thing I've done to it is replace tubes!A SR for overdrive? You can do better than that for a lot less money, unless you like replacing speakers all the time. A bone stock BF driven hard either sounds lousy or blows up...get a tweed Deluxe.
It depends on what distortion sound you're going for. First time I tried it, I wanted "Crazy Train", so I was disappointedhahaha
that sounds awesome!
So, you'd say a Super Reverb would sound good distorted?
What would you call exceptional overdrive amps then?
Well not really. The Deluxe cranked tends to get muddy, the Super gets huge. I love a Super cranked all the way. But I agree it is so loud in most situations it won't work. The Deluxe is one of my favorite amps but I don't think they hold together over 6. The Super begins to come alive at 6 (from and OD point of view).
I like a Super at about 3 or 4 on the volume. At that point it is still pretty clean and a decent OD pedal it works real well. When you consider the Deluxe is pushing 12" of air and the Super is pushing 40" of air it makes a big difference in tone also!:27:
