Buying either a 100w or 50w marshall mg.

I was looking at buying one of these mg series amps. I'm looking for something i can play in my room and could be used for a gig maybe later on. I tried the 30w version and it was pretty loud for being 30w. I just want your guys opinion on what you guys think i should get.

for playing in your room, no need to go above 30W ... for basement/garage jamming with drums, bass, another guitar, etc you'll need more .. probably the 100 ... which will maybe even give you enough volume to do a small gig, especially if mic'd through a PA .. if they have a 2x12" option, it'd be better than the 1x12" option ... a head and a 4x12"cab will move even more air ...

if you let us know what kind of music you'll be playing, and where you'll be playing, and what kind of tone you are going for, there are lots of guys here who can give you advice on amps of better quality / value for your purposes than those MGs

I had an MG 50 and it was plently to play along with drums, bass, and another gutiarist. I put a mic on it for bigger shows, but for small shows the 50 watts was plently. Although that line of amps is pretty low end... you may want to consider saving a little more, but if that's not an option the 50 or 100 watt should be alright for ya.

I have an MC100RCD 100w amp head that I'm not using anymore. It did its job for jamming purposes. Would you prefer a combo amp or a head/cabinet set? I can at least help with the head.

all i'm gonna say is that if you are willing to spend the money on a new MG series amp, go on over to the trading post and look at Hoss's thread about the Tech 21 Trademark 120. That is your best bet right there. Same price ... MUCH better amp

Just finished a practise with my band. The other guitarist plays an MG 50w (1*12). It definately holds up volume wise and we play kinddy a loud, (too loud if you ask me, but try telling that to the drummer). Tone wise I bloody curse it though. He plays with quite a lot of gain and it's really fizzy. I've heard lots of good things about the AVT range if you want a Marshall though.

i'd really reccomend looking at another amp, the mg heads are composed of more car stereo parts than anything, and the speakers, well, the magnets on them are about the size of my fist, maybe less

there are much better options for the money

by the way, how much does an mg 100 head cost plus speakers? you're talkin over 600 bucks!

You can get a traynor YCV40WR or a YCV40 all tube 1x12 40 watt amp for the same price. If you're diggin more of a marshall tone, you could go for a traynor YCV50 Blue with el34's. Trust me, way better tone than any 600 dollar wanna-be 1 preamp tube AVT, or MG.

Tube amp have a very seriuos limitation, they doesn't sound right until you crank the power tubes. This makes high power amps very limitating for small gigs or room practice. I have an ENGL 50 (50watts) and it's way too much loud for room practising and, when I play with my band (drums included), I can't go further than 2 in the master volumen if I want some gain in the preamp. I have played with it in a small pub (50 people there), no problem, but It could give much more volume. So, unless you are a jazz player and you want a high clear headroom, I'd go for a 30Watt amp. If you want that clear headroon then go for the 50W. If you want a 100watts amp then probably you'll need to buy an attenuator.

I recomend you to read this short paragraph on this document by Miles Rose from Groove Tubes (go directly to page 43). It has been very usseful for me to understand power in tube amps. If I knew that I'll probably wouldn't buy my amp but other much quieter.

breogan is right, except for one important thing ... his info is valid only for tube amps ... the MG is solid state ... for solid state, one needs an amp rated at more watts to get a comparable performance ... i have never heard a positive effect of cranking a SS power amp into distortion the same way as cranking a tube power amp

I didn't know that... I fact I just assumed it was a tube amp... Yes!! you are right!! there isn't any advantage in cranking a SS.

Well, In case you want a good SS I can recomend you a Trademark30 or 60. Once I played a Trademark60 on a shop and it had a great tone quality, clean and distorted.

Im mostly probably going to play in my room. I play most punk stuff like Green Day, Weezer, MxPx stuff. Im looking for a amp up to around $500 in price with a marshall sound. Im looking more for just a combo amp cause I don't have the room for a head/cab yet. Im going for a new combo too if that'll help.

i'm going to go with the general consensus and say to steer yourself clear of the MG amps. there are much better amps out there for the money. i've never played through those tech21's...i've heard nothing but good things about them, and i'm even going to consider them for a new practice amp for when i move to chicago in the fall.

but yeah, look at other options instead of the MG's.

TECH 21!!!! The dudes telling you about Tech 21 amps are 100% correct. Tech 21 isn't the only make or anything to consider, but dollar for dollar against those cheap Marshalls, Tech 21 is the hands down winner.

Neat thought: The Marshall Sound. As the proud owner of a 100wt Marshall JCM800 head, I can honestly tell you that the MG series do not really create the Marshall sound. They are a basic solid state amp. The Tech 21 isn't 100% on either, but it is designed to properly be able to emulate (among other sounds) the sound of a Marshall stack. Go to the website, they have sum wicked demos and sample settings on there.

Guys im going to check out the 60w combo tech 21. I checked the stats on it and they look good so far. I was wondering if this a ss or a tube amp too. I need to try this amp at the store before I get it.

It's solid state, but you should trust these guys. The tech 21 stuff is fantastic for solid state. Matter of fact, they sound terrific cranked as well! Check their website.....lots of sound samples too. When you try the 60 out, be sure and ask a sales guy (who hopefully knows what he is doing) to help you out because their EQ is a little different. Good luck and good choice.

If your gonna go for that type of Marshall, the 2nd gen Valvestate ( VS65 or VS 100) are MUCH better tonally than the AVT or the MG. Very natural and warm. I had a couple over the years and always like them. I don't like the AVT, the first Gen Valvestate and the MG but those 2nd gen Valvestates from 1997 or so are cool. The MG really offer every little in the way of anything other than saying Marshall on the front.
