Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

Hi,

Just finished re-wiring my strat project after a failed attempt and I finally have sound! But it's mega buzzy! And if I remember rightly this could be a problem with the grounding somewhere?

the buzzing seems to stop or at least die down when I touch one of the pickup poles. How can I determine what's causing the problem?

Thanks

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

I wired my strat project a few weeks ago and had nothing but noise. I had wired the input jack incorrectly so I swapped the ground and lead on the jack and it worked fine. Could that be it?

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

I've followed the schematic correctly so I don't think so but I'll give it a go later on today.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

bump, I re-wired with the same problem... If I touch ANY metal part of the guitar, tuners, bridge, trem claw, pickup poles the buzzzing seemed to stop.

What parts in particular do I need to check?

Thanks

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

it would help if you posted specifically what pickups/pots/switches etc you have...

Did you remember to ground the trem?

+1. If you get the buzzing to stop by touching a metal part, then you are giving it a better path to ground than it has now. Recheck all the ground wires (and preferably use a meter if you have one).

yeah, I grounded the trem claw, if that's what you mean?

everything had a wire connecting it to my tone pot which was then sent to the output jack... obviously my soldering wasn't up to scratch. I've ordered some different wire as I can't seem to get on with the vintage cloth stuff, So I'll give it a go with regular pvc coated wire :)

Thanks

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

right, I re-wired it with different wire, much cleaner this time.

Had the same problem. Re-cut the grounding wired on each pickup so they were newly tinned wire to pot connections and the buzzing went away.

But, whenever I touch the bridge of output jack socket etc. I get a slight pop or ticking sound...

is this still a grounding issue? or what part of thge wiring ahs gone wrong? or is it a defective part?

Thanks

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

anyone? I'd really like to get this long project finally finished :D and I'm sooo close

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

chances are it simply a less than perfect solder joint...ground or otherwise, I have rewired probably a dozen guitars with no problem I couldnt fix by rewiring....EXCEPT my LP so many solder points..it does eactly what you describing..I have rewired it 3 times including 2 complete pickup changes...Im getting a new neck pickup and will give it one more try..the 21k Diablo in the bridge just amplifies the problem...but I learned just to live with it in this perticular guitar..I always keep my hand on the string or palm resting on the bridge wich quiets it...with this guitar it has become 2nd nature and I dont even consciensly think about it when playing anymore.

okay thanks, I'll re-wire it all again.

I don't really mind because I have tonnes of wire now, and I actually like the practice. Just a bit concerned that it might not fix the problem...

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

I re-wired it one last time to the best of my ability and it's worse than before. So I'm buying new pots and a new switch. and starting fresh. because It's quite possible I've overheated something or somethings just got so dirty the connection won't hold.

What ways have I got of checking the pickups work? I want to eliminate everything I can without having to buy new ones!

Thanks

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

are you grounding the back of the pots together then to the spring claw? also are your pickup/control/spring cavities shielded?

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

I have 2 pots in this set-up.

I have all ground wires from the switch and pickups going to the 1st pot. then a wire going from the first pot to the 2nd pot. where I've then got a wire going to the output jack. the trem claw is connected to the 2nd pot where all my ground wire meet before being sent ot he output jack ground lug.

is that the right thing to do?

also, no the cavity's aren't sheilded, could this be the cuase of the popping sound? I assumed this would be a wiring problem as it isn't a normal issue and assumed i'd not grounded something correctly?

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I ordered new switch, pots and using new wire, new iron and new solder...

had a brainwave last night and wired the custom custom into my highway 1 strat... and it's the same buzzing problem! I then wired my JB back into the highway and it's fine! SO it isn't my wiring it's the sodding pickup!

seeing as I had to swap the green and black wires for the ground wires when testing it in my Highway strat... I know it's the bare wire that's the problem...

How can I sort this? Will I need to cut the WHOLE lot back a few inches and add some on using the splicing tutorial?

Thanks

you might just want to replace the 4 conductor on it;)

Re: Buzzy wiring problem, grounding issues?

RIGHT! Progress = 0!

I replaced the 4 conductor wire on the Custom Custom. Put it in my Highway strat and it's still buzzing. put my JB back in and it's also buzzing. this grounding problem is REALLY getting to me.

I tried doing a 'Continuity' test on all parts I could get a prob too, and according to my meter everything has a clear signal to ground!

Short of rewiring BOTH guitars... what can I try? and what could this problem be?

Thanks
