Anyone tried to make it a custom 6?

I haven't, but I did make a pickup similar to the Custom series with an A6 that came out sounding really good -- plenty of full honk and grind in the mids without sacrificing bass or presence.

Upper mids, a bit scooped sounding. Try a Ceramic mag or an A2 mag.

Or a partially degaussed A5 -- that will smooth out the mids quite a bit, though you'll lose some output.

The C5 is great for rounding out an overly middy or bright guitar, it's strengths are a responsive low end and glassy high end that cuts through without being ice-picky. I think it has a cool throaty lead tone too, but if your guitar is already strongest in the lows and low mids then it's probably not the right choice. I put the C5 in the bridge of a Hamer that was strong in the mids and highs and it perfectly balanced it out, sounded like a monster. It's probably my favorite Duncan bridge pickup next to the Pearly Gates.

NOTE: If you EQ your amp with the mids low then it's going to dramatize the slight mid scoop, mids are the guitar's territory, crank 'em up.

I love a tone that has a strong and complex midrange... it's where the guitar sits to complement the rest of the band. Even with my custom, I have my mids quite high... and thats why I didn't really like the C5. I tried compensating with my amp eq... even tried an eq pedal. It just sounded a bit lifeless without a punchy midrange. I guess it may sound ok if you're just playing in your bedroom... but I don't like it in a full band.

I've tried all 3 in my Les Paul and the DC had the most bass and treble, the CC the most mids and that left the C5 inbetween.

In case anyone wants a comparison according to one player's setup, here's a couple clips comparing the CC to the C5.

As you can tell they sound totally different from one another but what I hear mostly is how vintage voiced like the C5 is where as the CC is more modern and aggressive. Both cut through really good on these clips too.

I've been tossing the idea around of swapping the mag in one of my CC's for an A5 to make it a C5, just for kicks. These clips sound to me like it might be worthwhile to do.
