My search facility just won't work so I'll start a new thread. Some of you may or may not remember my few weeks of buying 4 x 12's? Well, I bought this old mid 70's Orange cab that had been painted black and looked rough as a bears ass and I decided it would be my project cab. Here are the original pics
As you can see it was in a bad way, someone had just cut the grille cloth out of the front! The baffles are a real PITA to remove because they are glued and screwed and there was a bit of damage to the inside that I had to fill prior to painting. The original tolex came off fairly easy BUT the glue did not. Several hours of scraping it with a hobby knife blade and very sore fingers and thumbs and it was good to sand. Another few hours of sanding, filling and sanding again and it was ready. First I painted the inside black, the baffle and proceeded to start with the grille cloth. I originally got some buscuit coloured basket weave and thought I did a good job of getting it straight and tight. So on with the tolex. Well I love white tolex and I could not get the genuine Orange Co "white" covering anywhere. No matter as I went with my all time favorite, Marshall off white levant. Whilst I was fairly pleased with the end result my disappointment was that I could not cut the corners neat enough that I did not have to fit corner protectors. I just think that amps and cabs look so much classier without corner pieces. I did at least get the correct type of black corners and they do look good. Next was the gold stringing. I was worried I wouldn't be able to save the original pieces but with lots of care and patience I managed to get to black paint off and it looked better than I thought with very few marks! Next in with the baffle. When first installed it looked quite good, but I was doubting my choice as it didn't look as good as I thought it would but I left it overnight to dwell on it. Next day I got in from work to find it had gone kind of loose or saggy.... hence my thread asking for help (thanks to you all who offered advice). I ordered new cloth and started again following advice given and the info in the link Chris posted from Scumback. All I need now are the old metal handles which I'm having re-chromed or nickel plated with the outer part powder coated and the new back panels I'm having cut. I haven't decided whether I'm going with castors or just 2 lengths of hard ash for the bottom just like the old Orange cabs had? I'll probably fit the speakers tomorrow. Sorry for the long post but it really has been a labour of love... I really doubt I would bother ever again as patience is not one of my virtues and it's just so time consuming. Hopefully you'll think it was worth the effort, I do! I'll update it when it's complete......
