Cab gurus...

Re: Cab gurus...

That’s exactly what I bought off a friend in about 2004. I’ll say that one thing I don’t like about it is how the plastic hardware doesn’t hold up well. That terminal cup can lose an outside corner if you tighten a screw too much.

Re: Cab gurus...

I also had the exact same cab to use with my JCM800. The 12-75's were nicely broken in and sounded pretty good. I took mine to Scott Splawn after I bought it and had him put heavy duty wire in it, clean it up, replace 2 corners and put new grill cloth on to match my amp. It was a solid cab for me, but to be fair I didn't drag it around to gigs. For that I think I'd install metal handles for added strength.

Re: Cab gurus...

Ha, I saw that cab today on Craigslist here. It looks too heavy for me.

Re: Cab gurus...

Not a big fan of the T75 speakers myself. Make that is the sound you are looking for otherwise it is an expensive box.

Personally I would hold out for a cab with V30s or greenbacks. You should be able to find either under $500

Re: Cab gurus...

G12-75's

Same thing as any 1960a

Kimda expensive for something supercommon.BTW, England cab doesnt necessarily mean brit speakers, they're ALL brit cabs, would have to check dates for that

To be fair Dave, most things larger than a baritone Uke are too heavy for you! :lmao:

If you enlarge that open-back pic you can see how much particle board is used in the 900 series cabs, I prefer the earlier 800 series ones that are predominately ply, or the current models that are plywood construction. Some players actually prefer the particle board cabs, I once was talking to a guy who was a metal player and he said that he and his metal player friends all preferred certain Laney 4-12 cabs because they were made out of particle board. Depends on your own preferences.

I was going to say that I thought the 900's were mdf or particle board but I wasn't positive. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. I have an unknown 4x12 that is MDF. I rebuilt the baffle and built a back panel out of ply (back panel was missing on the cab when I got it) but the shell is still MDF. But I only paid $25 for that cabinet. After the wood work and grill cloth I still have less than $100 into the cab itself. It sounds great.

There is no more particle board in a 900 cab than an 800. The case and baffle are birch ply. The back is LDF used since ‘72ish

Re: Cab gurus...

Mesa traditional/stiletto. It will make all your amps sound more tonalicious! (especially your Stiletto and that Express 112, you'll be shocked)

The Marshall for $350 would be good though.

Re: Cab gurus...

The price is around average asking price from what I've seen around here. I'm not a fan of 75s though, unless you're using them with a darker sounding amp with gobs of mids. But, you can always hock them for $40-50 each and get something else to stuff in there.

At one time, the 1960 cabs were all ply (later they were ply with a PB back), I thought they still were during the 800 series, but I'm not sure when they changed to the predominately particle board construction. I do know that the 900 series are PB, as evidenced in the pic of the open back in the pic in the link above. If you enlarge that pic, you can see that the whole cab is PB, it's plain to see. In any case, I used to have an all ply Marshall 4-12 and small box 50 head, those of course were from the plexi era. That cab was much lighter, I used to move it around by myself when on the road, the ply cabs are much heavier IMO.

Not a fan of T-75's but they have their place.
If you can get him down to $250 snag it, otherwise pass.

You can believe what you want, but I have recovered numerous Marshall cabinets and can tell you from first-hand experience that 900 series 4x12 cabs (some 2x12 1936 cabs were all MDF) are and always have been birch ply. The MG series is built from particle board. Perhaps you are confusiung the two?

The only particle board used in the 900 4x12 (other than the back panel) is the strips stapled to the birch speaker baffle.

Need higher res and peeling tolex

See parallel lines on the ends, it's ply...see ~13 parallel lines iirc, it's Soviet GOST "Baltic Birch" ply.

See 5-7 parallel lines, it's crappier chinese ply. If it's dense and solid, it's voidless and better. If the faces have a bunch of patches and the sides a bunch of uneveness or missing chunks, it's utter crap.
