I need a few cabinet and speaker ideas for my new Reeves custom 12 head!
was thinking about the avatar vintage for the cab ... and as far as speakers go im a complete noob. looking for a david gilmour/modern claptonish tone.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

An Alnico speaker would probably be what you want for that kind of class A amp. EC has been using Tone Tubby alnicos in recent years too. The Celestion Blue, the Emi Red Fang, the Weber Blue Dog or Silver Bell all come to mind here.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

I love my Avatar 212 cabinet and would not hesitate to purchase and recommend them as a good choice for an affordable high quality cabinet.
As for what speakers to get, I'll let those with more experience make those recommendations.
Myself I have the V30/G12H30 combo in a Traditional cabinet being driven by my SF Bassman. I couldn't be happier with my tone.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

I just looked at that amp on the Reeves site, very nice!

Vintage cab from Avatar is a great choice! Not sure what spkrs to recommend for the tones you're seeking. I liked Greenbacks w/my Hiwatt, but that was a bit older school sounding.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

Yeah, the Reeves amps were one of the ones that made me drool the most at the LA Amp show.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

I just went to the Avatar site. Are you planning on a 2x12 or a 1x12? If you find the Alnico Blue cost prohibitive and you want them to load a 2x12 cab from their selection, then you have a couple of options.

You could substitute one Blue for a G12H30, or you could go with the proven V30/G12H30 mix. The V30 was originally based on the Alnico. If your going with a 1x12 then I would probably go with a Blue behind a 12 watt amp.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

my preference would be a 2x12 ... but it would have to be used ... if i cant find a used 2x12 ill get a new 1x12 ...

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

so if i go with the 2x12 you would recommend two different speakers rather than two of the same ... if so what does this achieve/what are the advantages over two of the same ...

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

Well two slightly different speakers can combine the best properties of both in good way. A proven combination is the V30 and the H30.

Another factor is the high expense of alnico magnet speakers. Ceramic magnet speakers are less expensive. For example, instead of using two Blues you could use one Blue and one H30, which goes well with the Blue, saving some $$.

Two speakers that are the same (especially the Blue) are fine too.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

ok that makes sense ... i know the vintage hiwatts had fanes and reeves has a vintage purple speaker made by eminence which is a copy of the old fanes ... how do these compare to the celestion alnico blues ...

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

I don't know enough about the properties of Fanes compared to the Blue. Hopefully sombody that knows more will jump in here. Low wattage alnicos are a proven tone stratagy for small Class-A amps.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

I've heard that fanes while the ones in AC30's sounded quite bad compared to the alnico blues are the sound of hiwatts. otherwise a blue h30 or greenback h30 mix is fairly versatile.

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

wait ... i thought that the ac30's had the alnico blues and the hiwatts had the fanes ...

Re: Cabinet and Speaker Recomendations!!!

Another option is the Cannabis Rex or the Swamp Thang for Claptonish. Or the newer Canis Maximus.

My post probably isn't clear. From what I've heard sometime in VOX production AC30's were offered with fanes not sure if it wass just to certain countries or what. WHat I meant was that these fanes sounded bad in AC30's where alnico blues are the speaker for that amp but from what I gather the Hiwatt sound is as much the fanes as the amp so for a Hiwatt amp fanes might be better then alnico blues.
