Re: Cable connectors: Brass, Chrome, or Gold?

Depends on what you´re looking for, tonally.

Brass and Chrome conduct electricity like ass (compared to gold), so they would (theoretically) be a bit darker in tone. Gold conducts much better, but not nearly as well as copper or even better silver.

Problem w/ copper and silver is that they corrode fast (compared to gold), that´s why everyone was raving about gold connectors whern they first came out.

Of those listed, I´d take gold ("pure", not plated). Pure Silver I´ll always choose if I can ;)

Hmm.. Gold is said to be good, but I only have that on one set of earphones.
It doesn't make a difference to me really, since the headphone jacks I have are made of steel, I think. I've never heard of chrome plugs..

Stay away from the George L gold ends if you live in high humidity climates like I do here in Florida...You quickly lose your contact with the gold and it oxidizes pretty often..No more gold ends for me!

Best sonic quality?

Gold.

Most pleasing to my ear?

Brass. :burnout:

Re: Cable connectors: Brass, Chrome, or Gold?

My Bayou cables have Neutrik NP2C chrome connetors and they sound MUCH better than my old Monster rock cables with gold connectors. I would worry more about the build quality of the connector and the cable itself than if it's gold, brass, etc.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: Cable connectors: Brass, Chrome, or Gold?

Gold is the best conductor of the bunch, which gives it more accurate sound reproduction (less coloration of the signal), which is 99% of the time what you want in signal wires. Also, as stated, it won't corrode like many other conductors (brass patinas similarly to copper). Chrome is a nickel plating, so the conductivity is only as good as the material underneath.

i'd opt for gold if there's no silver available. I never even tried chrome or brass but gold is just the better conductor.

The gold oxidizes bad here in Florida...Read my post within this post..

Re: Cable connectors: Brass, Chrome, or Gold?

yeah tell me about it john! With the humidity down here in miami i have to deal with black strings within the first 2 hours of practice! Gives a nice touch to the tone IMO!

I just use regular fender cables that came with my strat. Expensive cables arent worth it at all IMO, cables roll off a tad of brightness all in good taste to me. And anything that isn't very very corrosion resistant is useless, avg. humidity here is 100%!

It's so humid, that I can't stand to be in a drier climate! My hands dry up terribly when humidity goes down to 60%.
