Cabs a plenty

Prayin' to Cheeses
So I was dissatisfied with the sound of my V30 based 4x12 mesa cab, and ordered one with C90s; for use with my Mesa 5:50+ head. Due to land early next week. In the meantime, I think the V30s have mellowed a bit and now I am kinda starting to like them.

Then I hooked it up to my Silver Jubilee. Holy ballz.... I am not a big Marshall guy but it sounded great. Gonna use that rig to record solos.

My original plan was to trade in my Dual Recto and the V30 cab for another amp down the road but now I am thinking I just want to keep everything and have a giant wall of amps and 4x12s and keep buying more stuff like a Hovercraft Falcon head or an Orange or maybe a 6505 or something. What the hell is wrong with me?

Re: Cabs a plenty

That's my plan. On the short list is a 50 watt Jet City and another Carvin 412. "But Nic, you're 16, and you don't gig, you don't need one half stack, let alone two!" Whatever.

After awhile I'll be looking at a Recto and a Stiletto.

A Triaxis and JMP-1 would make a cool companion to the Mesas above.

Then a Fryette Sig:X and a Splawn Quick Rod too.

Soldano SLO and Friedman Brown Eye or maybe a Bogner would be cool.

Gotta dream big.

I like stereo rigs.

My dream is to run two half stacks in stereo - unfortunately, I am in my mid 40s and I don't have roadies :-p

Re: Cabs a plenty

No such thing as too much.

I also want to get a 2x12 and split it between a Tiny Terror and a Dark Terror in stereo. As a "downsized" rig.

Re: Cabs a plenty

Dude, seriously... why would anybody need that many giant wooden boxes full of speakers... Seems like a total waste to me... I mean they're just speakers right...

^ If anyone ever says to you "dude do you even lift" then you can show 'em this picture!!

Re: Cabs a plenty

I was running two half stacks in stereo yesterday: My Egnater SW45 into my Showman cab and my Bassman into a Marshall 4x12. It sounded glorious. I approve of the acquisition of as much stuff as you can fit into your domicile.

Re: Cabs a plenty

Nothing wrong with buying more gear. I have a few heads and 4x12 cabs, myself, and will probably buy more.

And by the way, try your Jubilee and Recto together. One of my favorite things is to run my Splawn Pro Mod and Mesa Triple Rec together, the Rectifier tone and a Marshall tone compliment each other very well.

Re: Cabs a plenty

empty's speaker cabs keep multiplyign lol

and I though my speaker farm was getting out of control!!!

Re: Cabs a plenty

I want a new Princeton Reverb.

hehehe I have a '67 blackface at home....

Seriously, do it. The Princeton reverbs from the 60s and 70s may be the greatest combo amplifiers ever made, and while I haven't tried a newer one I bet they are awesome. Fender knows how to make amps.

Yeah I think this would be a cool combination to record with. Now that the V30s are broken in a bit, whoa... they sound SO much better! I hated the tone at first but I think I needed to give it some time.

I think the dual recto through the C90 black shadow based cab will be a pantcrapper. Can't wait to try it.

I played a 66/67 a month or two ago at GC when Dr. Vegetable and I got together in SF. I almost bought it on credit (they only wanted $1600 for it and they had 18 month interest free financing) but wound up not going through with it, which is nice because it lead to me getting the Egnater. But it was one of the best amps I've ever played. I will own one someday.

Re: Cabs a plenty

Although I really do want one, my comment about the Princeton was intended as a joke, since it's completely counter to everything this thread's about. That said...

I saw Jim Campilongo live at his weekly Monday gig in NYC last week. What that man can do with a Tele, a 10' cable, and a Princeton reverb is nothing short of amazing. He got everything from Mentheny jazzy cleans (complete with "chorus" that he plays by adding vibrato to individual notes a chord) to "How Soon is Now"-style tremolo (which he also "plays" by hybrid picking chords instead of strumming). Next thing you know, he's getting "Live At Leeds" tones by cranking up the guitar and slamming chords over the upper end of the fret board.

The Princeton is indeed an incredible little amp.

BTW, Jim C and his band were so good, we're going back next week. Any NYC-area forums bros want to join us, come on down. He starts at 10 PM and plays for an hour, so you can be home by midnight. PM me for details. Highly recommended.

Yeah, I've heard good things about rectos through C90s, and my Avatar cab that's loaded with V30s is my favorite for my Splawn. Scoop the Recto a little bit and pump up the mids on the Marshall, you'll be in a state of bliss.

Re: Cabs a plenty

Best way to dial in a tone... An American amp with boosted lows and highs to compliment the mids of your British amp.

I'm about to move on the perfect British counterpart for my Sunn model T :smokin:

Re: Cabs a plenty

I have heard the Model Ts are amazing. Sunn made the loudest freaking amps... I had a Beta Lead back in the 80s and that thing would knock the paint off the walls... can't imagine what their tube rigs would do!

(oh and they sound great too, they aren't just loud!)
