Cabs....Marshall vs Orange vs Mesa

Could anyone compare the following (both in sound and build quality)?

Marshall 1960 BV

Orange 4x12

Mesa Recto Std, and Traditonal?

(note that all three cabs come with V30s)

Re: Cabs....Marshall vs Orange vs Mesa

I can tell you the Marshall vs Mesa...

Marshall will be tighter, have a more pronounded midrange, and will be a bit more tame in the highs.

Mesa trad sized will be fairly tight, kind of hi-fi sounding, with a slightly pulled back midrange. Might have a bit of a shrill high end, but I find most Mesa cabinets to have that.

Mesa oversized will be considerably darker than the other two, will sound 'bigger,' but will lack the tightness and a bit of the clarity of the others, as well. Can sometimes have the aforementioned shrill quality.

I've never tried an Orange, so between those...

It really depends on your personal style and the music you'll be playing.

The Marshall, closely followed by the smaller Mesa will rule the three for very tight, stop on a dime, and more intricate metal such as Meshuggah, Soilwork, In Flames, etc. The Marshall won't have as hi-fi or as dark a sound as the Mesa, though.

The oversized I find sounds great for bigger sounding bands, and maybe less intricate guitar work, like Metallica, Low and The Gathering era Testament, etc. Again, it'll sound bigger, but a less defined and middy.

I'm very curious of mesa recto amps. Do you know of anything I should listen to if I want to hear what one sounds like under mid-gain?

And how is their cleans? (I'm assuming fender like, since a mesa is just a fender from hell.)

Although not really mid-gain I usually like to point out System of a Down's Toxicity. The whole album is basically a showcase of the many of the different sounds a tweeker can pull out of a Dual Rectifier......there is some Marshall work on that album too, but all the main "out front" tones are Mesa.

Some other bands to check out (I'm going for an assortment of styles, so don't flame me) would be Dream Theater, Soundgarden (Superunknown), Alice in Chains (Dirt), Crowbar (Sonic Excess), Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn, P.O.D., Blink 182, Godsmack, Disturbed, Tool, Stabbing Westward, Foo Fighters, Mudvayne, Nickleback, MXPX, KingsX, Incubus.

Bold = bands that I think might have mid-gain tones going on (but I could be wrong).

They cleans are good. They can be hard to dial in as the clean channel has enough gain on tap to bury alot of other amps "lead" channels, and hot pickups exacerbate the issue. When you dial them in they're quite good, but they're quite modern/cold sounding and alot "stiffer" feeling than traditional Fender or Boogie (Mark II, III, & IV) cleans. I've noticed that alot of bands that rely heavily on cleans tend to add a separate amp....both Korn and Limp Bizkit for example were using Diezels for awhile.

The Orange's are great. They are thicker sounding I feel in comparing both the Marshall and Mesa and they are thicker than both of them woodwise. My only beef with them is the Tolex is not very roadworthy.

Awesome info. Thanks man.

I was just wanting to look into something with a different flavor to add to my classic 50. Sounds like it might be up my ally.
