Cabs

Ok, it has become apparent to me over the years how speakers and cabs have an effect on your tone. Obviously Marshall cabs a quite popular, are some better than others? i see folks seem to liike either vin 30s or greenbacks. I currently have a splawn 4X12 with their small blocks, a Carvin 4x12 with their British series and a Avatar 2x12 with (I think, Celestion 75s in it. I run the Splawn cab with my Splawn obviously, but I was wondering if I should change speakers in the other cabs. I put a Private Jack in my PV classic 30 and it improved the thud sound I was getting with that amp when I hit a big chord, but it kinda sounds "wooly", so Im not sure if I like that. So Im considering another speaker for that combo too. thoughts?

Re: Cabs

Well....just like anything cabs sound different..speakers sound different.. marshalls higher end cabs...1960s are good stuff, some of the cheaper stuff like MG cabs are just that..cheap. mesa, bogner, orange, Hk and many others make high quality premium cabs too. Then there is Avatar and other smaller builders. I have an inexpensive Ampeg cab right now, as it had as good a tone for about 1/2 as much $ as the other cabs I was comparing it to, but I am starting to feel the need to upgrade to something a little bigger and better.

Speakers are as personal as guitars and pickups. Find some tones from other players you really dig, and see what they used to help steer you in the right direction. I like old music and thus old style speakers..g12m and G12h..and with certain amps I dig the more modern sounding 65s and V30. Not a fan of some other ones like 70s and 75s.

There are a bunch of speaker demos on yootoob, and celestion has some good clips too, so you can get an idea about those. I am sure eminence and others do the same.
