cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

I have to vote SuperD. It's what hot rod pups are all about.

Listen to you guys - 500,000 'JB sucks' 'no love for JB' 'JB not for bedroom shredders' but put it against a DiMarzio and suddenly you are all fan boys.

SuperDistortion - it what makes that quote in my sig happen. Loved both in the bedroom and the band!

I've always been a JB fanboi. To be honest, I don't know which one I'd like better in a Les Paul, but I don't put high-output pickups in Les Pauls. I feel a 70's arena-rock phase coming on, though, so you never know.

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

I've never tried a super distortion. like Jessie said: maybe when i have a les paul laying around someday.

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

has anyone put a double-thick ceramic in a full shred and tried it in an LP yet..?
thinner poles, slightly hotter, otherwise not that different on paper (obviously the wind's a different story)
everyone's always jizzing over the ceramic custom in an LP; where's the imagination?

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

Not a good match in my opinion. The Super D is a C8 with a DC resistance of 13.7k and the JB is an A5 with a DC resistance of 16.4k. There are almost no similarities between the 2.

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

I'm going with the Super D, hands down.

it sounds fuller, smoother, less annoying, no ugly spikes anywhere, and sounds fantastic in both alder/maple/boltons and in mahogany set necks.

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

The JB is the best lead pickup I've ever used.

It's also the worst rhythm pickup I've ever used.

Super Distortion is an all around good pickup, but it has a unique sound. It'll either work for you or it won't.

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

I use a JB in my Gibson Explorer, Mahogany/Mahogany/Ebony.

I like it? I agree the Rhythm sound could be better, but I can't beat the lead tone.

I find its a nice balance as compared to an 81, which, while the rhythm tone was good, I absolutely hated the lead tone.

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

The last couple years my "thing" is vintage single coils.
But having had both I prefer the Super Distortion over the JB.And I do agree the JB was a little weak in the rythm department IMO.
I just installed a SD I had around in an agathis strat and was surpised that I liked it........for certain things, but a SD prolly won't ever make it into my main axe.

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

I own three JBs and have played many more; however, I've never tried the DiMarzio. I'd really like to try one, though, mostly out of curiosity. Les Paul through a Plexi reissue with Greenbacks.

The Dimarzio Super Distortion was my first ever aftermarket pickup. I have been a Seymour Duncan fan ever since. ;)

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

What kind of rhythm playing are we talking about

Does it matter? My experience is that I don't like it, which means that your opinion on the subject doesn't matter to me. Go bother someone else.

aside from the fact that they both were the first offerings from dimarzio and duncan as high output replacement pickups for a hotter, more driven sound;)

i've only tried the JB, and it was alright. definitely not for me, at least at the time i had one. i wouldn't mind having a super distortion though:naughty:

WARNING: HIGH TESTOSTERONE AREA! USE CAUTION WHEN POSTING!

I'll take a pass on this one. :9:

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

Plus....

SuperD in the neck; Monster bad@$$ lead tones and rhythm grind.

JB in the neck; not so much.

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

The Super D sounds thicker and the JB more articulate IMHO.

Who said anything about there being similarities? I was just asking which would be better for hard rock...

Re: cage fight - JB vs. Super Distortion?

In my experience, the JB has this lovely singing quality to it that is great IMHO. The SD sort of has a syrupy high end that I don't care for, plus it runs all the strings together, lacks definition and clarity. All this about a JB having a "spike" is BS. It just isn't as dull as some other pickups. ;)
