I was using my Marshall JCM800 2203 last night and wanted to use my Metal Muff that usually works... So I hook it up to my RGA7 and it sounded horrid! Like it wasnt fully plugged in or a bad connection. So I thought it was the cord I tried both seperatly plugged straight to the Marshall they both sound good, so I plugged it back into the Metal Muff and it was still bad I tried the knobs and it want good. So I tried my SG and it sounded great both cords and the Metal Muff but not the RG. So can a guitar not work with a pedal? Please help!

It happens all the time, especially with fuzz pedals.

Re: Can a guitar not work with a pedal? help me :'(

gotta turn the gain down and run relatively clean. Metal Muffs are really huge distortion/fuzz pedals, so running as near-clean as you can will have to happen or you'll just end up with a muted buzz that has no guitarish sound at all. You're pushing the amp way past clipping to the point that everything but some fundamental bass hum is getting through.

I am not saying you are wrong but I turned everything down to nothing except volume... It sounds really bad still...

Re: Can a guitar not work with a pedal? help me :'(

It happens.

Obvious causes include dirty/old strings, string action set too low, extreme down tuning, flat battery with active circuitry, collapsed Tune-o-matic bridge, incorrect fit of ball ends into through-body stringing ferrules, cracked top nut, yadda, yadda.

Some pickups drive pedals sweetly. Others do not. In extreme cases, the pickups fry the ICs in digital circuits.

Is the new Ibby wired up correctly? Does it sound normal without the Metal Muff?

Maybe something came loose. Check the wiring. Troubleshoot that jank.

Probably get away with just resoldering the connector on it... or it could even be that the prongs are a little bent outwards so you don't get a good connection. Just bend them towards each other a little bit.

On the topic of do some guitars not work with certain pedals. Absolutely. It's not a new problem. Some just sound with certain guitars or pedals than others do.

Sometimes, a combination that ought to sound good "browns out". Every once in a while, a bunch of gear that, on paper, ought to sound appalling, produces an unexpectedly fabulous racket.

CASE IN POINT
Mid-price guitar into overdriven Blackstar HT-5H with Boss Slicer, Catalinbread Echorec and Boss Fender Reverb pedals in the send/return loop. Slicer set to loop. Instant Pink Floyd sequence à la "One Slip".

I have a metal muff sitting around. To be honest, I think it sounds horrible. Very brittle and cold highs, and the mids have weird spikes.

There are a lot of "metal" pedals around which I think sound better, but right now I like the SD Twin Tube Mayhem which has the same kind of vibe as the metal muff, just better:

I got *much* better tones out of the Metal Muff than the Twin Tube Mayhem, both times I tried each one. :D

Re: Can a guitar not work with a pedal? help me :'(

Is your amp dark and dull sounding, and do you play black metal?

Guitar --> OD --> Distortion Pedal --> computer --> noise gate plugin --> EQ plugin --> power amp plugin --> speaker cab IR

I can sculpt just about any sound I want, but there has to be a fairly decent distortion sound in the first place. Maybe the problem I was having was that by the time I found enough gain out of the Twin Tube Mayhem, it was unusable in my setup.
