Can a Phaser be modded ?

Does anyone know if I can get my EVH Phase90 modded to have some sort of level or presence control. As it is now, its either on or off and you can only adjust the speed or sweep. Sometimes I'd like to have on but not in the mix quite so much.

You can add a volume control VERY easily to a pedal. I drew this up really quick. This is how to do it.

I dont know if volume is what I'm after. I dont want the overall level to change just the amount of the effect in the signal. Maybe depth(thanks JBfH)is a better description.

Re: Can a Phaser be modded ?

I'm just throwing this in here, because we're talking about phasers and its mods. Inside the MXR phase90, there is a small potentiometer close to the top part of the pedal. I don't know what that is for and haven't got around to mess around with it.

I have always wanted a phaser without the whoosh effect. At certain parts of its cycle there are killer tones and I would like to be able to set it to those frequencies like a wah.

Thats there for biasing purposes. On a phase 90 clone I built for closed eye, there's a "sweet spot" where the phase effect is most pronounced. If you alter it, it'll lessen the phase effect.

www.buildyourownclone.com has a vintage 6-opamp phase 90 (the first phase 90 circuit available). Not much whoosh at all. Guys who like subtle phases would totally be into it. I like pedals that even the last shmuck in the back of the room can tell when its turned on.

KJ, try adjusting the trimpot on the board. That may lessen the effect for you and might do what you want a bit. If you dont like the way it changes the tone, its always easy to turn the pot while playing and find the sweet spot again. Otherwise, its possible to change the depth resistor or something, but in those MXR boxes space is tighter and margin of error is significantly higher when drilling holes or fitting offboard components.

Re: Can a Phaser be modded ?

joelap, thanks for the info, I was hoping you might have an idea. JBfromhell actually has come across a mod that sounds like it might be exactly what I was looking for. I knew I couldnt be the only one who would want this :). I'm not sure where he found it bought its probably one of the sites you frequent and he has offered to give it a shot for me too.
