can a single humbucker do this?

Does a bridge humbucker exist that can go from squeaky clean to Slayeresque distortion? For example, I switch my amp to the clean channel and back the guitar vol down a tad and get good cleans --- then max the vol pot, switch my amp to the lead channel for metal carnage....all with good results? or is this too much too ask for any single pickup?

I ask because I just acquired a 1985 BC Rich Custom Shop Stealth. It has no pickup at the moment, just a single humbucker rout at the bridge and a single volume knob. The guitar is neck-through, maple neck/alder wings, with an ebony fretboard and nice big Kahler flatmount.

duncan distortion with a 500k push/pull on the volume to switch to parallel for clean sounds

any pickup can get good cleans and good distortion

A Duncan Livewires Heavy metal will NEVER clean up. That is about the only exception. Those things are flamethrowers.

It sounds like you want a choir boy [no not the h/rock band or any other ideas you may have] and then a heavy metal humb-b too.

Unfortunately you will have to start with a fairly 'hot' p/u. you can't have humb-b's that aren't in balance with their partner, otherwise they aren't what was written on the tin.

Yes you can split coils but it really only influences the sound so far.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just placed an order at Warmoth for the Distortion (trembucker spacing), 500k push/pull pot, Switchcraft mono jack, and a wiring kit.

I can't wait to wire this beast up! The Stealth has to be my favorite BC Rich shape...so balanced and beautifully-twisted looking :firedevil

Drinks on the house...I'm buying!
