Can any experienced member tell me if a 2x8' cab would work?

Hi guys!

The question it's self explanatory...? I have two 8' speakers laying around and I think it could a nice thing to try. If 8's work for bass and acoustic why they shouldn't for electrics?

No reason why they wouldn't. 2x8 will definitely lack the bottom end oomph of 2x12, but it'll certainly work provided the impedance and power handling of the cab match that of the amp’s output.

What kind of speakers are we talking about?

you could get a great sound with 2x8 and 1x15 with a well built box and crossovers. the 8s alone will lack bass and wont be able to handle any real power.

These speakers aren't guitar amp intended. Those are a Beyma (Germand brand) broadband speakers. They are designed to work with HIFI amps in low wattage situations (35watts/each). But I am considering the chance to buy guitar designed speakers. Do you have any suggestion?

Well, Eminence it's selling a the moment a 875 Legend speaker, this can handle 75Watts. But I can tell you there are speakers out there (not guitar intended) that can handle over 250 watts.

The biggest difference between play back and guitar loudspeakers are that the guitar loudspeakers are designed to color the signal, where hi-fis are designed for the most accurate sound reproduction possible. I'm not saying you can't use hi-fi speakers for a guitar cabinet, but don't expect to get as much coloration from them as you get from guitar loudspeakers. These "design features" are namely the types of material used and cone design, as the fundamentals of the speaker operation are the same.

If I were to start suggesting guitar loudspeakers, I also wouldn't begin by recommending 8" drivers, unless it was absolutly necessary that you used 8" drivers.

Most, but not all, 8" drivers with that kind of power handling are designed for woofer applications. Often, higher frequncies are attnuated and played by smaller speakers. These 8" drivers are often not designed to handle wattages that high at higher frequencies, as the movement of the voice coil is used to cool the unit. Most of these drivers also have enlarged voice coil vents to facilitate increased air flow. With higher frequencies, there's very little movement of the voice coil, which can cause the coil to overheat. This would not be an issue at lower volumes, but could become an issue at insanely high volume levels. FWIW, I've seen 8" woofers with power ratings of 600 watts max or more (these typically run 300-350 wrms). Like I said, though, these speakers are not designed for the frequencies associated with electric guitars.

Buy, why you wouldn't? Why do they work for acoustic and doesn't for electrics?

Re: Can any experienced member tell me if a 2x8' cab would work?

There's no reason why they wouldn't work... I didn't mean to imply that. I personally prefer the 12" drivers. I find they cover both the upper and lower frequencies equally well. Matter of personal preference, nothing more. ;)

I think if you crank 'em up and wail rock leads through them that you'll blow 'em up...and quickly too!

Re: Can any experienced member tell me if a 2x8' cab would work?

one of my first amps was a Peavey Audition Chorus and it had 2x8 speakers....well was supposed to have 2x8 inch speakers but really had the equivelant of a crappy pair of 2x6" speakers since there was a 1" strip torn out of the speakers on the outside rim all the way around....heh....yeah, they sucked, but that amp got me through that first year :)

Well, right now I've tried two 8' speakers with my TM10. Both handle well the high and middle frec but on bass they seem to lack a bit of definition(I should point out that the guitar I've used has alnico II pickups and this may be the problem...). There is an overall feeling of distance aswell, as if the guitar was played throught an stereo HIFI.

I was hoping to solve the presence and the bass problem with a 2x8 cab. Anyway, If I want to make a high quality cab I'll spend more on both 8'' speakers that I would with a high quality 12''... :(

Experimentation it's the only reason to keep going :( :(

I have a Vibroworld Cabinet by Zack Engineering that is loaded with one 8" alnico Weber speaker & one 12" Eminence Red Coat Red Fang alnico and this cabinet sounds incredible. I was going to change the Eminence for an alnico Blue Dog, but the original speaker sounds so great that I determined there was simply no need to do so.
I was considering picking up a 2x8 on ebay a few weeks ago, but the bidding went above $60.00 (it was a lecturn modified to guitar specs with a weber sig (one alnico & one ceramic) speakers). I think the end price was around $85.00.
Ho Hum...
