Can certain guitar stands ruin Gibson finishes?

This is what a friend at the music store told me. I have a Gibby Les Paul (arctic white) & he told me I shouldn't be using a guitar stand that has the black foam or rubber contacts. He said he has seen over time how these stands ruin Gibson finishes? Could this be true?

He told me to use a stand that has special orange colour contacts on it.

Has anyone heard of this before?

Thanks

Your friend must be joking with you, i had my Gibby SGS in different stands for about 2 years now and there's no sight of finish loss :smack:

YES.

He's right. Some rubber on cheap stands WILL definitely alter the finish. Be careful. I use only stand with "foam" protector, never use rubber!

I have heard this before, but don't have personal experience with it. You do have to be more careful with the laquer finnish on a guitar. I think there is some truth to this. BTW be careful if you use tuner cleaner, not to get that on a laquer finnish, either.

Finish loss will appear after a long time, not if only placed on the stand for a couple of hours...

Yeah, the black rubber, over a long period of time, can discolor the laquer.
Where it's REALLY an issue is on Gibson binding. I have a black Warwick 7 guitar stand with the black foam. I recently noticed the binding on one of my Les Pauls getting yellowed on every spot where it rests against the rubber. I just wrapped a bandana around the foam on all the slots where my Gibsons go.

Re: Can certain guitar stands ruin Gibson finishes?

Is it like a chemical reaction between the rubber and laquer that will make the finnish look bad? I've also heard that it will make the finnish easier to crack and flake off.

Thanks for the quick responses! My LP is only on the stand when I'm gigging or practicing. When not in use, it's in the case. But just to error on the side of caution, I'm going to buy one of those special stands he suggested that won't harm the finish over time. (I'm pretty sure he had my best interests in mind & just didn't want to sell a guitar stand. After all, I bought the LP from his store) I can always use the extra stand for my strat or acoustic.

I'm sorry :crying:

Yeah, I remember Robb/GoMano saying this occurred on an SG in Arctic White that he was selling.

Weird!!!!!!!!!

YES! ABSOLUTELY! Vinyl destroys laquer finishes. It makes it gummy and causes it to bubble up. The only solution is a refinish of the affected area because years later it will still be sticky and loose.

Re: Can certain guitar stands ruin Gibson finishes?

According to vintage guitar expert George Gruhn, the only guitar stands he uses are all wood ones with felt covering the areas in contact with the guitar.

Re: Can certain guitar stands ruin Gibson finishes?

Yes the black rubber definately does discolour and if you have a white guitar, the black marks come off, but the "nicotine" stains remain - this also applies to cheaper guitar cases with dark linings.

Re: Can certain guitar stands ruin Gibson finishes?

I just cover my guitar stand with some ripped up towels, and they're secured with some tape (on the inside) and 2 rubber bands. Sounds pretty ghetto, but its not too bad.

Re: Can certain guitar stands ruin Gibson finishes?

My room is always in the way of almost direct sunlight. As a result, the outline of the stand-arm thing has been colored into my bass neck. There's one area of the neck that's much lighter than all the rest. :D

I personally like the Hamilton Hanging stands..............:)

+1
I heard about this a while ago... I used to keep my acoustics on such stands, checked, and it looked as if the finish "melted" in the places where there was stand contact. Thankfully that was limited to 2 patches on the back of the bottom of the guitar.

Yeah, sucks doesn't it.

Re: Can certain guitar stands ruin Gibson finishes?

this effect only seems to happen to guitars finished in the traditional cellulose
lacquer best to cover the "rubber"(there is a chemical reaction with the nitrate and the "rubber")with cloth, and of course keep any wooden instrument out of strong light and heat it can effect more than just the finish.

:soapbox:

One shop I was working at ran into this problem,it seems that nitro reacts when it is hanging and has sunlight hitting it.We covered the tubing with cloth and never had the problem again.
So yes it does happen, but only under the right circumstances. So it would be best to throw cloth over the tubing just to be safe.

This is exactly what I saw happen when I worked at Guitar Center... the rubber and certain types of foam reacted VERY badly with the new Gibsons we were getting in and we figured out what was going on but not before 5 Les Pauls (inlcuding 2 customs) were permanently marred. We covered the grips with socks that we bought from a ROSS store across the street and that solved it.

This seems like its a recent phenomenon and tends to only really affect newer Gibsons... anyone else notice that or will it happen with older guitars too?

i've got a new gibson acoustic and it seems to have acquired a mar, a blemish. i couldn't imagine what it was until i realized the mar appeared where the stand touched the guitar. it was both on the back of the neck and also at the base (bottom edge) of the guitar. i didn't have the guitar on the stand for long, as some of these posts suggest would make it okay, but nevertheless these blemishes have appeared and they will not come out with strong buffing and with gibson products to try. if anyone has suggestion here, i would appreciate it. i am disappointed that for almost no time at all in the stand, the guitar has suffered these marks. they are very minor, they look like smudges, but still it is annoying and they won't come out.
